Puppycut? I have a Morkie named Amy and she hasn't been groomed yet because she hasn't had all her shots. When she does I want to keep her as cute as she is now and someone told me to get a puppy cut. What exactly is a puppycut? I want to upload pictures of her but haven't found a post to tell me how to do it but I am still looking for it. Thanks for any help on the puppy cut. |
1 Attachment(s) Guinness when he had the puppy cut... He is now a cross between puppy and rebel as my groomer calls it. But just think of how their fur looked as a puppy. |
Posting pics Hi there, I am new here too. If you click on forums then on yorkie pictures the first posts tell you how to upload. I don't think it works with iPads though, but someone else will probably post if there is something I am doing wrong on iPad. I think a puppy cut is when the hair all over is groomed very short, you should google it, they are real cute, |
Guinness is adorable. The body fur is exactly like Amy's except she is a Morkie. That is the way her fur is and would like it cut to still be that way. I got to learn to upload pictures so you can see her. |
The place I take my Lil guy to for from grooming, daycare and bakery the lady that owns it has 4 yorkies so that is why I trust her 150% with mine but one of hers also has the puppy cut to give you more ideas :) Cover Photos | Facebook |
I am a mommy to a Morkie too. If you check out my album pictures you will see a picture of Cruz as a puppy (black with tan) after his first hair cut, he looked like a completely different dog to me. Cruz now is mostly tan with specs of black. Also our first hair cut was not as cute as i hoped! Pretty funny when I look back now! |
This picture always makes me laugh.... Her baby had an IV to get her teeth cleaned so they had to shave a spot so she figured they might as well have fun with it and gave "boots with the fur". Timeline Photos | Facebook |

1 Attachment(s) Oh I learned the hard way... Ask to see pictures of their work before you trust them with your baby!!! I asked for a puppy cut with my first groomer and picked up a crying schnauzer!! |
I have the best luck asking for a westie cut! It keeps the face and fur a bit longer and I like the look. It seems like more groomers understand what look I want! Puppy cut can be anything from shaved to some 1/2 haircut nightmare. |
I found this link for Yorkie haircuts. I keep Buster in a puppy cut. Yorkshire Terrier Hair Styles | Hair Styles for Yorkies | Yorkshire terrier hair cuts, grooming styles |
There are all sorts of stories on here about people asking for a puppy cut and not getting what they wanted. I think a puppy cut means different things to different people. You would be better off finding a picture of what you want done online, and showing them, or describing exactly what you want. She looks a lot like my sisters morkie did when she was little, and her fur is a lot different than my yorkies. I'm not sure if its maltese textured, or a combination or if shes just cottony and Yumi is silky since I've never been around maltese and Yumi is my 1st yorkie, but you might look for maltese styles too pick out your favorite yorkie, and maltese cuts and ask the groomer what would work best with her fur. Yumi and my sisters dog look totally different with roughly the same cut. |
Oh, you should see the horror stories people have told about their first and second groomer visits! It seems every "groomer" has a different idea of what a puppy cut is! Remember that anyone can be a "groomer." There are no laws restricting who does grooming and nothing that says they have to have a certain amount of training. Try to find a picture of what you want and speak directly to the person who is going to do the grooming. Just because you hand a dog to someone does not mean they are the one who is going to do the work. My first time to a particular groomer went well. The second time I spoke to her about exactly what I wanted done but came back to a dog that had exactly the opposite done to her. Most puppies don't need much done to them because their fur is not that long. You may just want to have her face trimmed a little if that is what is bother you. |
Its important to find someone who has groomed yorkies and knows how to give a yorkie puppy cut. Too many times I see where someone gets a puppy cut and the ears are cut short. Yorkie ears are left long and feathered. The best thing you can do is take in a picture of what you want |

If you like the look of her right now, then maybe your groomer-to-be will be able to replicate it? It would be worth taking the photos to her, and discussing them with her, then deciding between you exactly what you're looking for. I did this, and it was a lot less hit-and-miss (the first time, she cut Harry's ears too short and he looked like an owl...) :D Good luck. Sally + Harry x |
I keep Morgan in a puppy cut but his hair grows so fast |
1 Attachment(s) Zachary had a puppy cut for his first haircut. He looked cute but looked up more like a Schnauzar. This picture is Zachary who hasn't had a haircut in 4 months so you know how short it was originally. I DO trim his bangs though to keep them out of his eyes. Pic attached is taken today, Zachary and his Japanese Chin big brother, Yumble. The longer fur on Zachary's back is straight but the short fur is nothing but curls. Zachary is about 6 - 6 1/2 pounds and Yumble is 13. Louise |
I agree with what someone else said on here that you will probably have to wait to see what "way" her hair grows. Puppy hair is always fluffy! By the way your little Amy is a doll! My Morkie has silky hair, so he takes after the yorkie in him. My mother has an all black morkie with hair traits as an maltese. Its funny to see them next to each other, you would never guess their the same type of dog! I think you will be okay either way, expect their first cut to be "off" and it will be more on point next time! I will have to find some pictures of Cruz's horrible 1st cut! :D |
Hi........my baby girl is now 8weeks and I need some grooming advice. What kind of brush, how often to brush, what shampoo, first age for cut? I'm getting here first set of shots Friday so I know or at least think she has to be up to date on shots before going to.the groomer. And I'm scared to cut the hair around her pads Cuz she's so fidgety!!!! So Yea......I need the whole nine yards on grooming til she can go to the pros.......and when the hair gets too long around her pads does it cause pain or Just discomfort? I know that's probably a silly question |

I know they always say to take them to the groomer after ALL shots are completed. Others here are much more experienced in the grooming stuff and can answer you much better than I can. WELCOME! Louise in NW Houston |
We have to brush daily in our house of else we get beaten with the brush. |
A puppycut just means the same length all over and can be any length from a #7 blade to a longer comb cut. Be VERY specific as to what you want your groomer to do. If you don't discuss everything you want done and how you want the ears and face and legs to look, your groomer will just do what she wants to do. And also be aware that if your dog has any mats next to the skin they will need to be shaved out because to brush through them would be very very painful for your puppy. Good luck with puppy's first groom. Can't wait to see pictures! |

Metal grooming combs are best for long haired dogs. A metal pin brush can also be used. I usually comb the tangles out first and then brush. I use the smaller 4" comb for face and legs. A 6" or 7" is good for the body. Daily coming is important for a puppy even if they don't appear to need it. They will get accustomed to being touched and handled and submit to grooming if it is done daily from the start. Here is a link to an online store that sells good combs and brushes reasonably. Sometimes a local pet store may carry a decent comb. toplinepet.com |
Amy had her distemper shot this week and will go for her bordetella next week. She is 3 months old today the 11th of Nov. She she be groomed before her rabies shot which going to be at 4 months of age or wait until she has the rabies shot? She took the distemper shot real good but that night all she did was sleep and the husband touched the area of where the shot went in and she yelped cause it was tender. The next day it was like nothing had be done. She was a trooper. |
