Pets are accepted at shelters woohoo! If you live in Delaware and have to evacuate I just heard on the news that 6 out of the 7 shelters are accepting pets. I think the indian river shelter is the only one not accepting pets. |
What good news! More shelters should do that ! Hurray for Delaware! |
I was just hearing that too! I am so glad. Be safe |
This is great news for pets, but I could not imagine dropping my pets off at a shelter :( Why don't people get out and take their pets with them? |

They should! It's inhumane to make us leave our babies behind to deal with the fear and the winds and floods and sounds all alone with no access to help or anything! |
During a local tornado in my area many folks refused to go to the shelters because they would not allow them to bring their pets. Especially some of the elderly who rely on their pets for comfort and companionship. |

Some Advice from my local news paper: Emergency Shelters and Pets Some shelters have requirements that include. 1. Pets must be crated when inside at all times. 2. Proof of Rabbies shot 3. No excessive noise from pets. 4. Owners must provide pet food and dishes for their pets. 5. Pet waste must be disposed of in a safe and sanitary way as posted. 6. Dangerous, exotic, disruptive or aquatic animals will be permitted in the shelter. Depending on the shelter, rules can vary considerably. Please find out the location and requirements of your own, local pet friendly shelter, before things become a crisis. |
I know many people died during Katrina that did not have to because they would not leave their animals. The mayor of NYC did announce on television that people could take their pets to the shelters. He did not give specifics. He just said 'bring your pets. We don't want you to leave them behind.' People in the north east are not accustomed to evacuating their homes but with the kind of crazy weather the whole country is experiencing it is a good idea to make plans ahead of time concerning what you would do if you had to leave your home. There are now millions on the east coast without electricity in the cold. Preparing for electrical outages is another thing that all should be thinking about. The people of NY, NJ and PA are facing being without power for weeks. |
