Hi everyone!
Hope this message finds you happy & healthy!
I have been reading about several instances on dog forums of people trying to take dogs. It is suppose to be a wonderful time of celebration with family & friends!!!! The sad thing is, it brings out desperate people & criminals who steal, rob and look for ways to make money or find free "gifts" to give.
I won't be going anywhere alone with my furkids for a few months... it is always good to have another person along, AND have them securely on a harness & leash. Keep yourself aware of your surroundings!!
We make sure that the house is secure (security system with many extras!) and doors locked (even when we are home).

I have always enjoyed having the dogs outside with us on Halloween night, but it will be different this year. Living in a subdivision that draws many people from outside of town, I just don't feel comfortable "advertising" that we have 3 beautful little Yorkies.

It is sad that we have to be so careful.... but I am already reading horror stories and with the Holidays coming upon us.... I am afraid it will only accelerate. :mad:

Agreed! Our pup will be under lock and key this Halloween. I am always very careful with her. :)

It was Christmas 2008 when those two people tried to take Tibbe out of his backyard as I watched through the den window. At least I think they did - sure acted like they were about to open the boat gate & come through it as I appeared through the back door running and yelling. They turned tail, jumped in the car and the driver burned rubber getting out of there. I'm certain they were after him!

Glad you were watching!!! The holidays can really bring out the criminals! so sad.

Now I know to stay on the backporch or just inside the back door if it's very cold! If they will jerk them out of your hand as they tried to do Yazmin, I know they will come into the yard over the fence of through an unlocked gate! Since then, I've bought locks for the gates & use the alarm when I'm gone.

My back gate is iron, with slates that my babies can fit through (told the twit that made it, make sure a 5lb yorkie can't fit through it)...my neighbour is a locksmith, I had him install a lock on it...well worth the money I paid for it! The gate is about 6ft high...kinda awkward to hop that gate...I still watch just to be on the safe side....mine will be indoors this Halloween, front door locked as well at all times.

We had a fence that was iron pickets/rods whatever....at the lake house. Some of my babies could walk right between the bars, and they said NO EXCEPTIONS to even putting up a "pony wall, 36 inches high...."cant block the view of the lake"....so I put chicken wire along the rods, and attached them to the rods with those black cable ties... it was absolutely invisable from sight...couldnt even see the chicken wire from th lake or even from as close as 10 feet away.....unless you KNOW it was there, you had NO idea....

Jeanie, we are both in the great State of Texas....did those people forget that???? A thief can get shot trespassing into your back yard.....especially if they make that grieveous mistake at night! I am so happy you were right there and was able to scare them away!

Thanks very much...will have to get some chicken wire...that will save me from being in guard stance by the gate...I can finally enjoy my back yard without having to worry about my two little ones getting out...no worries about Orion, at 13.8lbs...there is no way he can fit through the slats, he would get stuck if he tried!

The ASPCA was advertising last year and for a good part of this year to make people aware of the big increase in the theft of small breed dogs like Yorkies and Maltese. Now these dogs are being taken during home invasions right along with the electronic equipment and jewelry. I can't imagine how terrible a person would feel if their little dog was stolen.

I live in an area where big dogs are popular. Those of us who have small dogs are few and far between. I do have people stop me frequently when I am walking Gracie at the park to comment on how cute she is. I am glad they like her but it also makes me a bit uncomfortable.

Thankfully, we have a very secure home. I feel safer leaving her at home than taking her with me many times.

This makes me so sad. But I am also very happy that I have my big dog. Shes black and has an aggressive bark (but wouldnt hurt a fly) however no one knows that when you hear her bark. Joey is the first alarm, Carley is the silent one until things get serious. We know if she barks..something isnt right. The other night she was barking, not loud because it was dead of night and she knows the kids were asleep, but quiet to get our attention and there was a strange dog in our yard.

LOL. They were taking a chance in this state!!! But wow, what if I hadn't been looking out the den window, had gone the front door or stepped into the kitchen for ice & a Coke from the fridge or something? I'd have come back to the window probably just in time to see them getting back in that car - with my Tibbe! That's when I learned you have to stay out there with your dog or right on the poor or just behind the open door and to call the dog & head out to him if anybody approaches the yard! A few months later, I joined YT & found out about the need to be vigilant for predators & such!

And then I read about Yazmin being snatched from a busy street but saved, that story of Pitbulls & other dogs being targeted this Halloween and other close calls and it really makes you paranoid - thank goodness. Forewarned, forearmed!
