Abbisiania Hi to all, just a question, my Yorkie is 8 months old and she is so totally shy, she hides all the time, I am having trouble understanding although she is paper trained for the am, in the evening she seems to have forgotten where she need to go. Is it true that these are exceptionally emotional pups, I think I read that somewher. Please let me know. :animal36 |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Some Yorkies are more shy, but most tend to be outgoing and often feisty. Is she hiding from you, or just other people? If she is hiding from everyone including you, that would cause me some concern. If she hides from you and she has done it since she was a puppy, then I would say it is behavioral. If she hides from you and this is a more recent development, then I would think there is a health reason behind it. Emotional -- I think Yorkies are very expressive of a wide range of emotions, but ideally any dog, whether reserved or outgoing, should have confidence. There are training exercises that you can do to boost confidence. For instance, my boys were scared of new things they encountered on their walks, something as simple as a new lawn ornament. I would tell them to "check it out" and they would inch closer and closer to sniff and I praised them with each step they took. Regarding the potty habits --- try to identify circumstances that might differ from morning to evening. Are you maybe supervising more closely in the morning and that is why she goes to the paper? Is she distracted in the evening and doesn't want to make the trip to the paper? Be sure to praise her profusely every time she goes in the right place. I would also limit her freedom, not let her have free run of the house, until she starts going to the paper each time. |
Do you kennel her at night? Exceptionally emotional...well I have one that is my shadow always on my lap if he can be, I have one with severe separation anxiety who has to be medicated for his general anxiety, and I have one that gets grumpy and will go off and pout alone Sometimes depending on their history breeding or personality some can have bahvioral emotional issues, its very selective in the determining the degree, history and how such is being dealt with. This can be true with any dog breed. I do beleive yorkies are an exceptional example of terrier personalities...they are highly socialable and loyal, attached, and loving with their people. |
What is she afraid of? If she is off training in the evening that would be the time to watch her more carefully. Is she pad trained or do you take her outside? A dog that is not totally trained should not be left unattended. |
