marking Hello, I am new to this forum. This is my first Yorkie. He's 19 months old and a great companion. I've had dogs all my life, I had Jack Russells when my kids were growing up...they will fetch all day long, and are very easy to train. So now my little "Aussie," my Yorkie is my "empty nest dog" he's awesome, but somewhat stubborn, doesn't come when called, just looks at you. He doesn't like food, so training is really difficult. He's like a cat about eating, very finicky and refusses to eat!! Now he's developed this marking problem!!!! I read another thread about the marking. I have a belly band for him, I only used it when I took him to someone's house. I've recently discovered that he's marking on my leather couch and other places. He did this about 6 months ago, but we thought we broke him. We caught him several times, for about 2 weeks we wouldn't let him out of our site, I even teathered him. He seemed to be over it, but he's obviously started again. He hates the belly band, and so do I, but I won't let him destroy my furniture. Any other advise? |
Is he neutered? |
no  |
they are less likely to mark if they are neutered, and yes they are stubborn and smart at the same time |
Welcome:D Nuetering should help with the marking and lots of praise and consistancy.:) Try some different treats until you find one he likes, that will help with teaching come and other stuff. I tried alot of different treats and Joel wouldn't last through one training session until I got him Pupperoni. There not that great but it's the first thing thats made him go crazy. lol |
A sexually mature male is inclined to mark his territory. Once they get in the habit of marking it takes consistent training to stop the behavior. Neutering will help but it takes a few months for the hormones in the dog's system to stop effecting him. |
I've found that with UN-altered Males, that the irregularity of marking may depend on if he senses a viable mate in the area. Females go in and out of heat, the wind changes... Ha, lots of factors :) So, when he senses the Female, he's going to react. It's natural One thing I've found that helps is... Make sure you take him out for walks, where he can mark "his" territory outside. This frequently can "move" the advertisement to a more convenient place for you, and still fulfill his need. ;) |
Oh boy I had this problem with Cruz when he was a puppy and even after he was neutered(not as much though). He was completely house trained, yet I would still catch him lifting his leg. He loved to "mark" pillows on the floor, fake flower arrangements and my nieces pottery barn chair! Catching him in the act seemed to be the best way fix this habit. Sometimes I'd catch him lifting his leg (nothing comes out) and he would still do that kick thing with his back legs, like he was outside! As far as my nieces chair though that thing is doomed. They have moved and even in their new house Cruz searches for that chair! ;) |
