Where to put crate when she sleeps?
 

Our new Biewer is coming home in 2 weeks and am curious where everyone would put the crate?

I have a exercise pen set in the kitchen area that is about 3 foot by 6 foot. In that area, I have her crate, bowls, potty pad. I figured I would put the crate in there so she can get use to it. THere will usually be someone home, so she won't be left for long periods of time. Maybe a hour or 2 at the max.

Just wondering if I let her sleep in the crate in the kitchen at night, or move the crate to our bedroom at bed time?

Suggestions?

My vote is the bedroom of course I actually let mine sleep in bed with me so I'm a little biased. From what I understand, it helps to alleviate their fears being near you especially at night. Also it will be a new and unfamiliar environment for your little one. Brandi hated being away from me a night. She has slept with me almost immediately after I was sure she was potty trained.

I have a crate on a coffee table next to my bed, so the crate is even with
my head, so she can see me at night...never had a problem with her sleeping next to me from day one getting her...I have another crate in our
entryway that has a x-pen attached to the sides of the crate, for when I am in our office which is right next to the entryway...she goes in there when I am working.....I have the front door open so she can also see out...I also have the kitchen babygated, so most of the time we are in there during the day if I'm not working....I have a TV in the kitchen so it works pretty good, she has all her toys in the kitchen with peepads. I don't trust her yet to have a free roam in the house...we have too many outlets and wires and stuff, when I have to go to the store, I put her in her crate...(she doesn't like it, but at I feel secure that she is safe)...seems to work for us...but someday I would like to get her out of the two rooms..Oh and I have a bed in one end of the crate that is real plush and I also put two of my worn T-shirts in the crate also, so it always smells like me...the crate is a medium (30"L x 22"w 24" high)...so she has plenty of room to stretch out at night...she wakes up at 4:00 am never fails, so I get up and immediately take her to her peepad, then go back to sleep on the couch with her on my stomach...till 6:00 am..

All my dogs sleep in their crates in my bedroom.. i have a wall just for them..:)

I vote for the bedroom, and here are a few examples of why:
For the first week or so that I had Blazer I had his crate in the windowless downstairs bathroom- I thought that the darkness and quiet would keep him asleep all night. He did really well there but he would wake up really early. I moved his crate to my room, next to my side of the bed and he continued to sleep through the night but ended up sleeping in later in the mornings, too. (Could just be an age thing but whatever, I'm still happy about it.)
When DH and I got our GSP we had left him downstairs to sleep, too but he would cry a lot. Once we let him sleep in our room he was great and slept all night! A friend of mine got her Yorkie about a month before I got Blazer and her pup was still up crying every night until a couple of weeks ago when they finally let him sleep in their room. Before that he had the kitchen then the garage to sleep in but he didn't like it and would cry and bark most of the night.
I think our babies just need to know that we are nearby so that they aren't so lonely and scared at night.

Everyone sleeps in our room. Cats on the bed, penny our BC on her bed beside me, WJ the GSD on his bed at the foot of the bed, and new puppy in her crate beside WJ. Everyone sleeps through the night without issue. Pup Ned's to get up right when the alarm goes off, so we all d a mad dash outside. I don't even think I was awake this morning when she needed to go out. Lol

It might be worth investing in two - depending on how big and heavy they are - Harry's crate is so huge, there's no way I could lug it up and down the stairs! :D

I guess I am the exception here- every time I turned over Abby started whining to get out. One night in frustration my DH moved the yorkies to the other side of the house where the big dog sleeps. Finally- Peace!

I don't crate. Gracie has slept next to me since the first night. It is likely that your puppy may cry the first few nights in a crate by it's self so if you really need your sleep you may want her in another room. I guess some pups settle down if they are near their owner at night but I have never had that good fortune.

We started Waffles in the kitchen when we got her as thats where I crated her during the day for quick trips out that I made. But she cried at night. We moved crate to our bedroom and now its her fav place to be. She will go in there all by herself and nap.

My little one sleeps in our bed. When she was younger had her in a crate but she would wake up at 4am every morning. Since she started sleeping in our bed she sleeps in until 7am.

Harley sleeps in bed with me when hubby is working, and the nights hubby doesn't work Harley sleeps in his kennel next to our bd.. Hubby is a heavy sleeper who will toss and turn...

It doesn't matter where my Yorkies crates are at night, because I cover the crate at night. During the day the crates are in the living room and the doors are open, so they can go in and out when they want. All of my yorkies like to nap in their crates.

I would put the crate in your bedroom where she can see you and you will be able to hear her when she needs to get up and go potty and she wont be alone. Remember she is coming from being with her litter mates so being alone all of a sudden could be scary.

how excited you must be, when it comes to crates, a lot depends on your house, mine is two levels and my office and bedroom are upstairs. For a while I had three crates, one in the bedroom, the office, and the great room which is open to most of the lower level. So I moved her around depending on where I was. I got her midweek and since my husband works long hours and gets up early I wanted to make sure Lola did not act up at night so I slept in the guest bedroom with her in the crate, she did great and by the weekend the crate moved into our bedroom. Eventually LOL my DH wanted her to sleep in bed with us, so that's where she sleeps now, but on her own little bed. The only crate I keep out now is the bedroom one, once in a while she gets put in the crate if I am trying to clean or do something I don't want her to get into.
My advice is get at least two crates, put one in your bedroom and another in a part of the house that you spend a lot of time in and that perhaps she can see outside from. Send an email out to everyone you know often you can find one that you can borrow, that's what I did, and now one of my crates is lent out to a friend. you can often find decent used ones on Craigs list as well, and places like Wallmart sell them pretty cheap now. Covering them at night is a good idea, we covered all but one side at night and it kept her warm and quite. Also buy a few beds and try to get the ones with the loose pillows, I use cheap pillow cases over the bed pillow this way I can wash the pillow case and not always have to wash the whole pillow or bed. All my dogs have been bed freaks I think because I have always had one in just about every room, when traveling as soon as Lola see's a bed it's like relief and she is thinking, oh I have a place her. Wallee also sleeps in his crate in my room. The first week I got him, I tried leaving his crate in the gated kitchen but he barked and complained. We used to put the crate on one part of our L shaped couch and sleep on the other where he could see us. We could easily reach the crate and speak to him in the night if he became stressed. After about a week, we moved the crate into the bedroom and he has slept there ever since. During the day if we are out, he has a bed in the kitchen that he runs to as soon as we put up the gates..hehehe..too cute..They learn the routine very quickly.

Wow, Thanks for all the great responses. Ive now got 2 crates, and she is sleeping in our bedroom when she comes come. There goes the love life ;)
