Got our puppy today We got our puppy today. She is so cute- our other dogs like her, our big GSD male somewhat ignores her and our border collie female loves her. She watches her and grooms her. We were told that she was 12 weeks but after looking at the vet papers she is just 8 weeks today. She is too young still in my opinion. She squeaks and makes very young noises . So considering how young she is, is there any chance of me messing this up? Lol we got our GSD at 12 weeks and our BC at 5 nobths. So this young is very new. I'm taking her outside every 30 minutes to go potty but I'm having a hard time telling if she has done anything. Any suggestions? Thanks. :) |
Welcome & congratulations on your new Yorkie!!! Sorry about the breeder doing this to you! That is just fraudulent to me! Here are some precautions to take as a new Yorkie mommie if you are not familiar with the breed: First ask your small dog vet how to best care for a puppy this young. Getting one that young can be risky, especially if she's really tiny so keep her warm, check her often for signs of hypoglycemia all day & night(read up on it here & on Google as to signs, symptoms, emergency treatment, etc. & be prepared to get her to the ER vet overnight if necessary for a few weeks) as hypoglycemia can kill small puppies very quickly. I'd see if that breeder won't let her come back to momma & littermates for a while more, like another several weeks to give her a better start. But if not, read all that you can on how to care for a tiny, young Yorkie and be the best mommie/nurse that you can! Be very careful letting larger dogs play with her as Yorkies are awfully fragile compared to larger dogs and if they get too rough, bigger dogs can hurt them without intending to. I'd supervise all play sessions. To me, Yorkies are the best of all breeds and I think you will enjoy her so much. Post pictures and tell us a name when possible. Good luck to you and your little one and take lots of video & pictures! |
I agree with the above advice. I would also try using pee pads to make sure she is peeing. If you want to outdoor train just take the pad outside and set her on it. You can teach her a particular word for potting so that she learns why you have her out there. Give a small treat and take her right inside when she is done. I wouldn't take her out in cold weather though. If she is a tiny you really do have to worry about hypoglycemia. Make sure she eats frequently. You need to have her checked out by a vet right away. The vet will probably have something like NutraCal to have at home for an emergency episode. When it happens you need to act quickly. This little baby needs to be watched 24/7. I hope you don't have to leave her alone. |
Thanks everyone. I have her little towel down on the edge of the heat register. She's sleeping with her toy lion as we speak. We have her on a really good puppy food too, she ate a bit of it but was too tired from the days events. We bought her a wool sweater to wear too. That's an excellent idea about the pee pads, I live in northern BC and it has been snowing the past twi days. I will get DH to get some tomorrow' until then we will use some packing paper. She likes being outside, so tomorrow we will play when it's warmer out for a bit. I will be home most if the time, I don't work (yet) so I can be with her a ton. |
Welcome to YT. And Congrats. I agree with all above. Also say good pee or poop( or whatever word you choose ) when she does it. And then the treat. She will learn to go when you say go poop or go pee |
Low energy and being very sleepy is a sign of hypoglycemia. You need to be able to tell the difference between a tired puppy and a puppy whose glucose level is crashing. The body just cannot keep a constant level when they are little and they need to eat frequently. Get some NutraCal or something similar to have on hand. Once they go down it is too late to try to get them to eat. |
Thanks gracielove, this is a great suggestion. She slept great during the night in her crate. She loves to snuggle so I put a fuzzy towel in with her and covered her. Before this she was playing with DH. This morning she went pee outside and was playing and running around- until a load train blew and scared her. She's very nervous but very understandable, During breakfest she was making a lot of notice and was trying to get out of her pen- turned out she needed to poo. I'm hoping that this is the beginning of her telling me she needs to go. My other two dogs were super easy to potty train. Haha the XS sweater we have for her is way too big. As per names- we are thinking: belle, Lucy Lou, Stella, or Tsubaki. Thoughts? |
1 Attachment(s) Here is she snug as a bug. :) |
Ohmygoodness, that little baby is precious. I'm glad you are going to get to be with her through her infancy as she's so young & little. She's cute as a button! Just keep checking on her as the hypoglycemia protocol suggests & give her the Nutrical or whatever is suggested on your protocol to be assure she doesn't get very low blood sugar if she's lethargic due to that condition. My sister's tiny poodle went down at age 6 months from hypoglycemia, as he was still so tiny even at that age. She lived 5 mins. from vet so they saved him but, boy, it's a problem that can be bad in some dogs; and as you've no doubt read, the very young and/or tiny ones are most likely to get it, which is why even at night you have to check them out and give some Nutrical or something if your dog isn't arousing properly. Sorry!!!!!!! I'm being too scary and I don't mean to do that - just being a nanny and wanting to be sure a new mommy knows what to look for when no doubt you've got all this down pat!!! Forgive me for droning on!!!! No more! Have you any favorites for names yet? If you are like me, I have a legal pad with a list of names and it can take a few days to find out which one fits the dog itself! Except for Tibbe - he was 9 mos. old when I got him and his name for some reason just came into my head when I saw him - never have named a dog that instantly and weirdly spelled a name before! It's pronounced "Tibby" but for whatever reason that name and funny spelling stuck. And somehow it fits him. Can't wait to hear what her name will be and will you do a long, fancy one or something short & cute or preppy. |
awwee shes so sweet |
Awe what a cutie pie. I don't have more to add other than you might want to get her some canned food to supplement until she is older and make sure she eats every 4 hours. With the canned you can monitor better how much she is eating. Also make sure she is drinking. Check her little gums and make sure they are pink. If not get water down her quickly. One that young can be a handful but they can thrive if cared for correctly. A vet check and shots as soon as possible is a must. Congratulations and welcome to YT :). |
I can't believe the breeder sold her so young!! Be SURE and read what the experienced Yorkie owners tell you. They will be of great help in getting your baby through these next couple of months. There is so much you need to know when you have a puppy that young. Congrats! Keep the pics coming!! Louise and Zachary |
I learned later that my Amirah was too young and having read about increased risk of hypoglycemia until 12 weeks well I was on pins and needles. My vet had me give her a little syringe full of karo every day twice a day to three times a day to lower the risks. And I had talked to a yorkie breeder (who wasn't mine) she told me to give Amirah marshmallows every once in a while. But be warned she also said not give too many or you would have a yorkie on a sugar high. |
Thanks everyone. :) tonight we are going to the pet store to get some soft food- she doesn't like her new food; um mixing it with the food from the breeders- which was a brand that we felt wasn't good enough. Amirah mommy- I love the idea about the marshmallows. :) She is going to get a bath here- I need to bathe her because she smells like campfire and its bothering my allergies. We have the right shampoo and conditioner from our other dogs. She is very playful, then falls flat over asleep. I forgot how funny puppies are. :) |
You need also to be careful and not let her overplay they can have problems from that also at that young age. She needs plenty of rest. I helped my sis-in-law with a 7 week old and our laddy was 9 weeks when we brought him home and they love to play but tire quickly. Be sure to just keep a close eye on her. Best of luck with her, they are the best of breeds in mho lol. |
