Silky or Yorkie.. how do you know?? I know this might be a stupid question but until I joined this website I always thought they were both yorkies just different types... so with that being said how do you really know?? I have AKC papers and all BUT my not so little guy looks like a sasquatch next to other yorkies  |
There are people here that can answer this very well for you. I do remember reading one trait difference and that is the snout. A silky has a longer snout, I believe. |
If you have AKC papers I believe that pretty much guarantee he is a yorkie. AKC has strict guidlines and will inspect breeders. I dont think anyone registering AKC would register a silky as a yorkie. That is different from other registries that have loose guidelines and will even register a mixed breed. As far as appearance it is hard to tell the difference between a non standard bigger yorkie and a silky. A silky is long bodied rather than square like a yorkie should be but alot of larger yorkies are longer. Silkies have a longer snout but larger can have also. The coat may be a way to tell the silky doesnt grow as long a coat as a yorkie. It is important to keep in mind the yorkie as we know it has been bred down to smaller sizes. The yorkie ancestors were larger. |
I have never really tred to grow out his fur because I am found of the puppy cut... or as they my groomer calls it he has the Rebal Puppy cut. |
I have seen plenty of yorkies on here that couldnt grow a super long coat so Im not certain that is a way to tell either. I believe the way you can be assured is buying from a reputable breeder that studies there lines and yes they should be akc registered for the reasons I gave above |
