Seems like dogs get no respect I lost my baby Ace, four years old, last July. However, not one person from my husbands family reached out and offered their condolences or even a card. My in laws send cards all the time, they're big card people. Last Saturday we were all together for a wedding and not one person even commented on my little Ace! They knew Ace was our baby and how much my hubby and I love him, so it was very rude! I just had the need to vent to people who understand how important these little babies are to us. Like I said, it just seems like they get no respect!!!! |
I think people that don't have dogs and/or have children don't understand how important our dogs are to us. My husband and I can't have kids. My babies have always been of the four legged variety. I lost my "heart"...a pom named Jasmine back in 2006 and nobody, except my mom, really ever said anything. I know how you feel. I'm sorry for your loss. |

Yeah, I agree. What bothers me is some of his family are dog people, so they should know better. Just tired of thoughtless people. My mother was completely devastated when I lost my little Ace, and my dad was upset as well. Thank you for your kind words, and I'm sorry about your little Jasmine. They are angels now. |
Im sorry that your feelings are hurt. I completely undestand. When I lost Bunkey, I told a friend (that has 4 dogs and no children, these are her kids) that not only had Bunkey passed away but it had been so sudden and tragic. Her response "bummer". REALLY!! I almost asked her "do ya think you could FIND your give a D@^^ n?!". But turned away instead. I do understand how your heart hurts,Bunkey passed in 2010 and I still miss him,he was my heart. Sending you HUUUGS!! |
I am so sorry your family didn't reach out to you :( I wonder if they didn't want to upset you more by bringing it up? |

The good thing is here we all know how you feel and can support you. |
thanks everyone! i think i just needed to vent in the presence of yorkie lovers, lol! |
I guess there is always a mixture of animal lovers and those who are clueless about why anyone would care about an animal. I find that those are the ones that are usually pretty self centered anyway. It could be some people just did not want to bring up your loss for fear of causing you to get upset. Some people just don't know how to handle grief. I know that when I lose one of my pets there is just no consolation that would help. I just have to get through it over time. |
We Yorkie Moms and Dads understand...they ARE more than animals to us.....I never think of my babies as animals........... |

Some people just do not understand our connection to our furbabys. When I lost my heart , Moon Shadow, I was devastated. My DBF's friend told me, at a party I was hosting, he was glad that my cat was dead  . . . . I guess some people never learned from their mother. . . . If you can't say something nice then do not say anything at all. |
I am very sorry your husbands family did not rally their support but like others suggested they just might have not known what to say. it's true some people just don't get how important our pets are to us. Years ago I knew this guy and since he knew how important my dog was to me he tells me this story about how he was trying to be funny so he sent a card to a friend that had just lost his elderly cat, he said he was amazed that his friend told him how much the card meant to him, he was flabbergasted because he could not believe that someone would take a symphathy card for a cat seriously. On the other end of the spectrum I live on a small lake and our community is very tight and social plus a ton of us are dog people. When I lost my Kirby suddenly about three years ago, many neighbors dropped off cards and plants in memory of him. I thought that was very sweet but I also told everyone not to bring it up in public because I could just not talk about it at the time. I have two neighbors that have dogs that are failing and I know I will be dropping a card and perhaps a plant off when the time comes. One of the single guys on the lake lost his yellow lab that was as close to him as any child would be, he sent an email out about his loss and asked everyone to share any stories they had about her, it was very touching to read his tribute. This thread should point out that it is important to acknowledge the loss of a friends pet with at least a card. |

I've learned there's a big difference. I find it equally as strange the division between big dog people and little dog people. Sorry for your loss. |

My thought too. There are dog people, and then there are DOG People. I too, am so sorry for your loss. Long ago, I stopped expecting people to think, feel, and act like I do. I know I am tender hearted. Very few people understand people like us. That is why Yorkie Talk is so important, we do support each other like an extended family. A year ago I had to put my 18 year companion Noah to sleep. Only my husband, two sisters , my two sons and my YT family noticed my grief and responded. In my heart I know only one sister and my YT talk family really understood my broken heart. |

Saying something is always better than not. It's hard to comprehend that for a lot of people...including me. But I have learned it thru my own losses and what I would have wanted. |
