Air travel with your pet Im going to fly with my baby for the first time. I'm a wreck LOL it's a 5 hour trip but it's split up with the longest being 3 hours. Anyone have experience and what should I know? Thor's. Mommy:aimeeyork |
flying I had a similar situation about a month ago as I had to bring my three yorkies from New York to Colorado where I have relocated. The first flight was two hours, a small layover, and then another three hour flight. I brought them to my vet a week before the flight for a physical and he suggested a small sedative to be given a half hour before we left for the airport. Each dog had their own small carrier which fit under the seat (we had three people travelling and each had a dog). Two of my dogs were pretty quiet and only Tea', the older one, was a bit nervous but she quieted down. I was really stressed out thinking that taking off would make their ears pop and hurt like mine have sometimes..but they were verrrrrry good. At the layover I tried to get them out to use the pee pad but they were not interested. I will say that I think the fact that our first flight was at 6pm and they usually go to bed around 9 anyway..that that was a better scenario as they were more tired to begin with. p.s. Just thought of a p.s. :p I had carry on just for the dogs...in it I had pee pads, food, extra leashes, extra harnesses (I bought water when I got through the security check as you can't bring in water in bottles), a few paper towels and regular small towels in case any of them had an accident or threw up. The whole going through the security check wasn't fun, but if you speak up..they are pretty good about helping you through. Debbie |
I was thinking about a sedative but I was not sure if it's safe for them or not. I will be taking him to the vet before I leave so I'll check on that. Your brave traveling with 3!!! |
I was worried about the sedative thing also...but mine are all very healthy with no issues and each is over 5lbs. :D |

Just an FYI..at my airport (assuming all) they make you take your dog(s) out of the carrier at the security check..they put the carrier through the scanner and you carry your dog through the body scanner. They also did this odd thing where they tested your hands..wierd..not even sure what that was for. Also, I wasn't sure if you were going to put a harness on your dog (I had all three wearing them) just in case they got loose somehow. |
I looked up the security in the SA airport and yes you have to take them out of the carrier and carry them across the scanner. I'll make sure he is properly harnest. Should be an interesting trip. I can't believe how much they charge it's not like he is taking up a seat. |
We specifically flew airtran as they charged $75 per dog (the others wanted about double. The higher priced airlines also wanted a health check up, shot records, etc. (even though I had a recent health exam, and everything in order...I didn't want to miss something at the last minute and then what do you do??). The size of the carrier also had to be a certain size and they give exact dimensions...very small! There really is very little room for the dog to even move around:( |
