Should I cut her topknot? I grew out Trixie's topknot but have found that she really isn't fond of bows and my vet said that I must keep it loose or risk causing damage to her scalp....so for months now I'm keeping her topknot loose but the hair keeps coming out and she looks a mess.... If its too loose then her hair gets in her food. So do I just forget it and have the groomer cut it even though it took so long to grow out?? |
Noooo! Only bc I miss Joels topknot, hehe Just kidding. If its easier and cleaner you could cut it. What would Trixie want, lol |
I would do what is best for you and Trixie. My two both have top knots, but one day I may decide to cut them. Top knots are a bit of work to maintain, but I think they are adorable :D I think yorkies without them look like puppies. One of the things I love about yorkies is their hair. You can cut it so many different ways to give them a different look. I am totally bored by short haired breeds. |
It's what works best for the two of you. |

I thought the idea was to keep the location of the band away from the scalp so that the hair is not pulled taut, but to keep the band itself tight to hold the hair together. |

What are you using to keep the topknot in? As long as the topknot is not pulling on her scalp there would be no damage. Once you put your grooming band in you want to take the end of your comb and with one tooth under the band kind of pull the band up a little if it appears that the scalp is being pulled. I don't always put bows in Gracie's topknot but I do put the grooming band in or some days I use the tiny scrunchie things that they sell in department stores. I usually use those at night. Your dog should not be able to tell there is anything in the hair once your done placing the band. It has to be tight to hold the hair in place but not tight as in pulling the hair on the scalp. |
I use the terry scrunchies on Jada and Bogie and they have their hair up every day. I always make sure that the hair at the scalp is loose, just have the band tight around the topknot hair. You sure wouldn't want it tight down to the scalp even for a little while, or at least I wouldn't, I think of a too tight ponytail on my own hair and how sore it makes my scalp after only an hour or so. I think it is just a personal choice on what works best for you, if you want to cut it off I would. My mom and dad's biewer hates anything in her hair and they keep hers cut off (she is cute as can be that way too):) |
Bands, or tiny scrunchies. I had trouble with the tiny scrunchies staying in at first. Now I use 4 wraps and they stay pretty well, but will pull out nice and clean when you grab all 4 loops at once, plus, to loosen, I just grab all the loops and g.e.n.t.l.y lift to loosen the scrunchie, then pull a few hairs out of the center of the topknot to 'set' the topknot in place...gives a nice little poof. Brody and Mia both get topknots. I also use 2 scrunchies together and 3 wraps to make a cute 'twisted' look and 'match' outfit colors. I use bows, but not everyday...the colored scrunchies are so cute by themselves. I make their bows, so I will put a bow on a scrunchie, too...really cute that way, too. Good luck with whatever you decide...she'll look adorable no matter what you do! :D |
I do the same and use a new small scruncy every day because they stretch out I have been buying a bag of about a 100 for $1.00 at Family Dollar, they have both a bag of bright colors and one of pastels, at that price I can even afford two a day when needed. |
You know, I returned (exchanged) 2 bags of those scrunchies from Family Dollar because they were less stretchie that the scrunchies and didn't tighten...stretched waaaay out but looked smaller in the bag than the scrunchies did. It's great that you got them to work...maybe I need to try them again. Thanks for that! :D |
