2,000 coyotes live in Chicago With all of the talk recently of the danger to small dogs posed by wild animals, I thought this was interesting and frightening. An estimated 2,000 coyotes, probably more, live in Chicago. Researchers believe that larger carnivores -- bears, mountain lions and wolves -- will follow and are already pushing the outskirts of cities. We had a bear come to our Virginia town a few years ago. He was near the Wal-Mart parking lot. Study: 2,000 Wild Coyotes Live in ... Chicago | CNSNews.com |
Very scary. I feel bad because we are encroaching on their territory, but I don't want them eating my pets. |
I guess with humans encroaching on their territory, the have no where to go. Also, food is easier to get as well as humans are doing a good job of killing off their food source. Pretty soon, the will be no wild animals left except in zoos. I wish we humans could find a balance with nature. If we continue to destroy the ecosystem, we basically condem ourselves to extinction. Animals and plants can survive without us being on this planet but humans without a doubt cannot survive without them. |
We've had a couple of yorkies killed and other dogs attacked by coyotes in the suburbs of Chicago over the past couple of weeks. One of them jumped a 6ft. fence to go after a small dog and the owner said it was still there, sitting in their driveway when they returned from taking their dog to the vet. I think they are becoming desperate for food. Very scary! Between the hawks and coyotes, I don't think you can let them out of your sight for one second. |
We live on the outskirts of town, and every night yo can see/hear the coyotes right out back, our back fence is not solid, so at night Harley has to go potty on a leash because o don't want him to run and hope thru the fence And become coyote food |
I live in a wooded area. We have coyotes that have moved into the area that we did not have 10 years ago. Right now no one is really having a problem with them because they are out in the woods eating their natural prey. The problem is that there are no natural predators left to keep the number in check. There used to be mountain lions in the area but they are mostly all gone except for an occasional spotting now and then way up in game lands. It is a serious problem when they get into a neighborhood setting since there is no natural prey for them so they start hunting anything that moves. It would be nice if humans would start thinking of the consequences of what happens when they destroy the natural habitat of the wild creatures. The animals are going to go some where and no one wants them in their backyard. |

It is very scary. I had one in my back yard last year. I never let my girls out alone. |
Wild critters are definitely a concern...and there are plenty in Florida...including coyotes. There have been several black bears 'in town' here over the past few years. True, we are cutting down their habitat to build our own in the space they claimed as theirs, but one of those bears...the first...was less than 4 miles from my house...on the street I live on. I didn't have Yorkies at the time, but it's still a scary thought because you could run into one never thinking it could ever happen...especially during mating season when they really roam. |
We've been having a lot of bear sightings in So Cal. The news people said they are like relatives. They come over unannounced, eat all your food, and never leave. They've been taking dips in people's pools over the summer when it was really hot. We have lots of coyotes also. One girl I talked with said she had a yorkie snatched by a coyote during a walk. :( |
Black bears are pretty harmless unless they have a cub. They do get into garbage but a regular sized dog can chase them off pretty easily. My brother in law lives farther up in the hills than I do and he has them going through the backyard quite often. Certainly not someone you want hanging out in the suburbs. In some states they have to dart them and take them to a new location quite often. The mountain lions and the bob cats can really be dangerous around live stock. It's a shame. There are not many of them left in the wild. |
We have had several instances of Coyotes killing domestic animals here. Fortunately, those are well away from my house, and the Coyotes seem to use a Railroad Track Line, to transit in and out of the city. Someone living by such a "trail" should be extra vigilant ! |

At our last vet visit, when the doctor and I were discussing heartworm preventatives, he told me not to let the boys outside alone after giving them the pill -- for fear they would throw it up and I wouldn't know. Little does he know that my guys are never outside alone for 1,000 reasons. :p |
We had mentions of them on the outskirts of town last year but haven't seen any reports so far this year. Hopefully, they found a better habitat or something. I don't wish them ill but sure don't want them near Tibbe or our neighborhood pets out in their backyards! |
Where we used to live when I was in high school (a very long time ago loll!), it was a cul de sac & I saw a pack of coyotes running down the street @ night. I was paralyzed in fear & didn't move bc I didn't want them to see me. I could hear them growling & panting as they ran by! Neighborhood cats were disappearing... |
