Smelly Pup Hello, I am posting to request suggestions and tips on how to keep my 3 month old Yorkie, "Kiwi" smelling fresh. I have had him for a Week now. He was a little smelly so I bathed him last night with oatmeal tear-free puppy shampoo. The shampoo itself smells good... He was ok after the bath. He only gets walked to go potty and comes back in immediately. Needless to say I was snuggling with my little stinker after work and he is stinky again! I realize he is a dog and will smell, but is there anything that can help with his musky stench? I checked and cleaned out his ears, that doesn't seem to be a problem. Don't think it's his breath either! Thanks! Mommy of a very cute, very stinky but very sweet pup.:animal36 |
Dogs will have a smell especially if they get wet so keep Kiwi dry. I never particularly find my Yorkie stink...he smells more like milk powder smell...the only time he stinks is when he rub himself on dead worms in the garden....:animal36 |
Yorkie Sheen is a great in between bath refresher. Works really great! Plus it is a detangler as well! |
I think if you're dog has an odor it could be the start of some type of infection. I think you should pay attention to all odors. Foul odors coming from the ears could mean a yeast infection. If it’s coming from his butt, he could have problems with his anal glands. If it’s coming from his mouth it could be his food isn’t agreeing with him or he’s losing teeth. At that age, they are urinating about every hour, do you think he’s peeing and rolling in it, or are you taking him out hourly? You say you snuggled with him after work, was someone else taking him out? If you can't take him out hourly, you should use pee pads. He can hold it a little longer at night, urine production slows down, but during the day, a 12 week old yorkie can't hold it much longer than an hour. |
Thanks Thank you all for your responses. I wouldn't describe the odor as foul... I guess musky is the best description. Not his ears, although to be honest I didn't check his bum. Lol. He has been taken out every two hours or so. I will increase it to once an hour to see if it helps. Doing some research on "Yorkie sheen" as well. Thanks again for all your help. :D |

I would get him checked out by the vet. Could be a yeast infection. Yumi had one in her ear once and it smelled kinda funky, not like a horrible "omg eww" kind of smell but just not quite right. They can get them on their skin too and I would think the smell would be about the same. If you google Dog yeast infections there should be lists of other symptoms to look out for. I can't find where but I seem to remember reading that yorkies generally have a very mild smell. I can't tell that Yumi smells at all. That said some dog will smell more than others I'm sure. I would just want to find out for sure it wasn't medical. |
I have always used generic human baby shampoo to bathe my dogs. It smells fresh and clean, is mild on their skin, doesn't hurt if it gets in their eyes accidently, and is inexpensive. As long as he's not rolling in stuff outdoors or getting wet or dirty, he stays smelling pretty good for at least a week or two. After that, he can start to smell "doggy". |
I too would suspect yeast. It lives in their gut and permeates through their skin. Consider a grain free kibble and see if that helps. By the way, welcome to YT. Kiwi is such a cute name. |

My two always smell fresh after their baths for about 4 days. They begin to lose the 'fresh from the bath' smell after that and I bathe them again at 7 days. I know my male can get stinky if I don't keep his tummy shaved shorter to avoid him peeing on himself. What are you feeding Kiwi? |

ewww gross mine try that too |
what type of food are you feeding them, it could stem from that. I agree with Nancy that smells are an important thing to keep an eye on. Some foods have yeast in them that don't always agree with a dogs chemistry. other than being a wee bit of a stinker, is your dog healthy, pooping well, no vomiting and eating and drinking regularly? |
Food can cause some odor issues. Any new pup should be closely checked out by a vet. Many pups come from the breeder with various problems. If the smell is not from pee or poo then you are dealing with something that should not be going on. I would not use any human shampoo on him. The Ph in many human shampoos (including baby) are way to high for a puppy's skin. |
Are you sure it isn't his breath? I too have a young puppy and his mouth started to really smell at around that age. The vet said it was because of the teeth that were about to fall out or were falling out. I have since found many of the teeth and there are still a few loose ones there that I can see so the smell has lessened quite a bit. My sister in law's vet told her to freeze apple slices for her dog when it was teething to help reduce the smell. My little guy prefers the apple slices (peeled first) not frozen. If it is indeed the teeth, it will go away when the puppy has finished loosing the baby teeth. |
