Dallas is losing his hair It's just a strip down his spine. I had him at the vet yesterday for shots and asked them about it, but the vet seemed perplexed. He asked me if someone had shaven him. No, no one has. I'm hoping maybe someone here has experienced this. Some info for you: Dallas is almost 5 months old. We've had him for a little over 2 weeks. He had all of his hair when we got him. The things I've done that I'm thinking might be why: We have ticks in our yard so I did treat him with one of those liquids that you squeeze down their backs. I told the vet about this, though, and he said that could be it, but Dallas wasn't burned by it... His skin is fine. I also used human shampoo on him once, because he was really dirty and I ran out of dog shampoo. I'm going to add a picture (I hope it's good enough to see... is he losing his puppy fur and gaining his adult coat. the PH of human shampoo is not good for their skin, bad mummy, just give him a good brush out and a rinse the next time you run out. Have you found clumps of fur lying around? Put a bit of fish oil in his diet. What are you feeding him, it may be the food? |
It could be he had a reaction to the tick meds or it could be puppy hair loss although since its just on the back I think its the reaction |
It does almost look like it had been shaved. Ummm. It could be a medication response, although his coat still looks healthy in terms of shine/sheen. Has he had a full blood panel done yet? Thyroid problems could/can cause hair loss, but not usually in such a discrete pattern. Food change? Have you get clothes on him for long periods of time? Does he exit out a small doggy door to the backyard? |

My moms yorkie poo had this happen and so did my chihuahua. My moms vet told her to add fish oil to her food and it worked. My Bella's hair started growing back right away. Good luck. |

I have used human shampoo on all my yorkies and none of them ever had a reaction to it. I am not vet but I would think that if it was a reaction to something aside from hair lost there would be itching, a rash and so forth. I know that there are several medical conditions that can cause hair loss. If I was you for peace of mind and for a good frame of reference in the future I would have a complete blood panel done that includes things like liver, kidney and tyroid numbers. I did that with my dog as soon as I got her at four months, I did not know anything about her history so I wanted to know more than the vet could tell me from just looking at her, she was fine, but then again a year later I repeated it and plan to every year. Someone might have asked this, did you get her from a breeder and if so what have they said about the situation. BTW welcome to yorkie talk, you came to the right place for friendship and advice. |
