Getting a yorkie My DH and I are going to the breeder tomorrow to meet and greet our possible new addition to our family. I have wanted a yorkie for years and finally it looks like we will be getting one. She's a little girl from a litter of three, her siblings are both boys. The dad is around 7 pound and mom is 5 pounds. The breeder estimates she will be around 6 pounds- not that it really matters. She is being raised with other animals and kids. We have two other big dogs- our boy is a GS/Husky and our girl is a Border Collie- both rescues. The have been socialized at doggie daycare with yorkies and other small dogs and have been through lots of obedience training. We also have a cat- who plays with the dogs. It's super cute. Anyway, I guess I'm nervous, the reason why I'm writing this. I'm also super excited too. :) I have a few questions and would love if I could get some suggestions and tips. I live in northern BC Canada and it gets really cold here. Penny, our Border Collie wears boots and sweaters on walks. I can only assume the yorkie will be layered in many types of clothes- is the any you recommend for colder climates? We don't have pet stores close so online shopping is best. How are yorkies and cats? My dogs love our cats and they all groom each other- we will be getting her after she's 12 weeks old. I can't really think of any other questions but I will take lots of suggestions. Thanks in advance. |
Awww, CONGRATS and WELCOME to YT! I'm so excited for you and your new addition - can't wait to see some piccies. I bet the little punkin' will rule the roost. As far as clothes - a lot of people do use them here on their yorkies. If you look in the Yorkie Products For Sale section, we have lots of sellers there. Also, if you need boots for the colder weather for your yorkie - definitely get in touch w/ AllDogBoots. You sound like you have such a great group of furkids - like they're a little pack :). |
Welcome to YT. On walks, if you need a sweater so do they, if you need a heavy snow coat and boots so do they. I live in Fl. where heat is the biggest worry, so if you need shade and a drink so does your Yorkie. |
I have 5 cats and 2 yorkies and they cohabitate fine. Every now and then one cat will hiss and swat at another cat and my yorkie Jewels will put them in their place though. |
congrats on your new addition |
That is very exciting! I can't wait to see pics. I have big dogs as well (Boxers) and we slowly introduced them one at a time. Our big dogs are getting old so they don't romp around too much any more. They are best friends now and the big dogs are very paternal with our Yorkie (max). Since Max was a little guy, he was always liked by other dogs and I think it is because he was so well socialized. I am sure it will be the same for your new pup. Good luch with everything and WELCOME! :) |
I want to welcome you to Yorkie Talk and can't wait for pics!! |
I have the sweetest, kindest, 9# Yorkie ever -- but he just can't help himself when one of my cats comes around. He chases her and barks, and it's quite commotion. When I say 'NO'; and 'No chase kitty!', he tucks his head and his tail and looks embarrassed. But then he does it all over again. Molly the cat seems to know Marley will get in trouble and entices him to chase her. After I chastise Marley, she sits just out of reach and grooms triumphantly. I don't think they'll ever be friends... And I've just learned to live with the melee. |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your new pup |

Thanks everyone. We met puppy today and I feel in love. :) Our doggies met pup and gave her licks. She is as big as our Whiskey Jack's tongue!!!! ;) We are a little concerned about her watery eyes; the breeder said it could have been because she was in direct sun or it could have been be use there was a smoke fire (a barely any flame, mostly smoke) that was blowing about 50 feet away from us. It was bugging me so I can only imagine what it would do to a 9 week puppy. Any thoughts? She goes to the vet for her first vet check-up on Friday so we will see what they say. Thw watery eye is one of the only things that is holding us back. Temperament wise, she's really mellow. She was very content to just be held. When my DH finally pur her down, she bounced fter hum, like a deer lol, so they played like this for a bit lol. It was cute. Anyway, I will attach some pictures of my DH holding her. Any thoughts on her appearance? What adult colour do you think she will be? Thanks so much. :) |
Ops here are the pictures lol. What do you think? What adult colouring do you think she will be? Thanks ince again. :) |
I wouldn't worry to much about the watery eyes yet. There were aggravating circumstances. You're not taking her until 12 weeks, right? I'd check back about that later & see if the condition continues. Even so, that's not the worst thing in the world. Mostly that can be improved with diet change and filtered water. Excited for you, though!! |
