Given how we cherish our little guys, all of us make sure that our yards are literally fortresses. Unless you take your little one(s) out "hunting" as I do, they don't have a chance to actually "catch" anything. Actually, though I do allow the hunt, I'm not really interested in them actually catching a prey, it's just the chase I want them to experience. However, they do occasionally succeed. Just to make sure that the "odds" are slanted toward the Varmints, I leave peanuts and corn out for the Squirrels, and a old scrap Skillet for our resident Possum, which allows any stray to come by and at least get a nibble. Two watering dishes as well out on the property, rounds out a bare necessity for them. One of our regular strays is an old yellow Cat, who is barely friendly, and sits at a few feet distance, when we put the scraps out for them. I haven't seen a Mouse/Rat in my neighborhood for years. The Possum and Cat would in most cases be considered a nuisance, however, I conciser them a resource. |
I wish we had a fortress...I thought it was the resident racoon eating my garden...nope freaking nasty bold rats. We get everything here racoons rats possums stray ferrel cats red tail gawks crows feild mice...thankfully we're a little too city so far for the bears, bob cats and pumas. Trash nights is a free buffet night! |
I used not to have (a Fortress) one, but I just kept on "nibbling" on the weak spots, and eventually.... One easy "fix" for a low place or one where something is digging under a Fence is... Just get a regular bag of Concrete, pour it directly into the hole/low spot and wet it with water. It will harden up, level out the hole, and be nearly impervious to something digging under. Putting it in dry, allows it to seep down through the ground, and really make a tough deep barrier. |
My two love to chase squirrels, I think it's part of their nature. Actually, they like to chase anything but other dogs. The only bad part about chasing the squirrels is I'm usually on the other end of the leash. |
katy-yorkie, Apparently you don't have an appropriate area, where there are Squirrels and you're able to unleash your two Varminteers. What you might do is, if you have a Doggy Park close. You could take some Bread with you, drop it down by the Trees, back away a reasonable distance, and when the Squirrels come down to grab the Bread, turn your guys loose. They'll LOVE the chase, and it's not too likely that they will catch the Squirrels. If it's too close for you, back away a little more where you're comfortable there won't be any contact. You'll have to call your guys back to you, to "reset" the event. PS: Take plenty of Bread, Southeast Texas Squirrels are FAST ! ;) |
Lizards!!!! Oh my, everytime I open the back door...Copper runs to the last place he saw a lizard just sure it is going to be there waiting for him! Funny funny. |
Lizard Tails are considered a delicacy among discerning Varminteers. ;) |
