Potty Pads Good Afternoon everyone, As some of you may know I'm new to this site. I've got a little boy Yorkie, Zuko, who will be joining me on Nov 2nd!! Cannot wait to get him. I was told he will be potty trained for inside when I get him. This may seem like a stupid question but how do you go about keeping them pee pad trained? Do they use that to poo also? How often do you have to change the pads if thats the case? Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated :) My last dog was completely outside potty trained so I'm new to the whole "pee pad" thing. Thank you! |
How often you change it will depend on how he acts. Some won't go on one more than once. Other's will use it a few times. Yes they will poo on it too. When you first get him I would confine him to an area, x pen, bathroom, etc with his pee pad. Then gradually enlarge the area until you can trust him in the entire house. You can also train him to go outside if that's what you prefer. Good Luck! |

I'm going to be getting my 2 yorkie puppies around the same time as you're getting Zuko and I'm really glad you asked those questions. My yorkie Barkley hated going out when it was raining or really cold so I like the idea of being able to use both pee pads and train them to go outside. I'll probably keep them inside until the spring and then start working on the outside training. Has anyone tried clicker training their yorkies? If so, was it successful? |
My Romeo is completely wee pad trained and he absolutely will not go outside. It's horrible when I am out and about with him because he "holds it" until he gets home. I got him when he was 12 weeks old and honestly, it took 2 days to wee pad train him (we had some minor accidents the first few weeks). Romeo uses a single pad twice -- when he wets the first time I fold over the wet area so he has access to the dry half and when that half is "used" I fold and toss. I order cases of the Clear Quest Puppy pads (quilted) from freshpets.com. Been doing this for over 3 years now and it's the only brand I've used. |
Thank you all so much for the info. Here's another question about the puppy pads - we will actually have 2 little guys new to our home. Would you suggest a puppy pad for each or one for both of them? Thanks again for all the answers. New to Yorkies and puppies that can actually go inside instead of having to go outside :) |
Good luck with potty training. Pads can work well, and in combination with outdoor pottying. It is important in the beginning not to let your pup have freedom to roam the house, until he gets reliable with using the pads. They often tend to confuse a rug or bathmat for the pad, and go there. I have 4 doggies, and they don't seem to mind sharing pads, and there are often 4 pee spots on one; though I pick up poo and flush it asap. |

I use disposable puppy pads but Morgan goes mostly outside only uses his puppy pad when we don't get him out |
I have purchased the Out brand pee pads for the past 2 years and they have worked pretty well. Recently Walmart started selling a different brand called Simple Solution. They sell for several dollars more than the Out and you get quite a few less for the price and the darn things leak! I'm just warning you and everyone else not to use them. I use the Out puppy pad frame that I purchased when I first got Gracie so thankfully my floor has not been ruined. I do, however, have to clean the tray every time I change the pad because the urine runs right through the pad. Warning! Warning! I pick up the poo as soon as I see it. I let Maxximus pee a couple times then change it. I am going to find a pee pad holder but right now I put mine on a garbage bag with newspaper then pee pad on that because sometimes Maxx aims for the furthest corner which results in puddles on laminate floor. Clean up any accidents and use enzyme cleaner to remove the smell they search for to pee again. You will know more as you see how your new baby reacts to it. This time I got the ones with attractant scent in it to draw him to it. |
Bailee uses washable potty pads and goes outside too. I buy really cute washable pads from doggiepeepads.com. They are colorful and hold up well. However, I can only wash them with Tide Free and Gentle. Bailee refuses to use them if I wash them in other detergent because he doesn't like the fragrance. :( :D |
Cali came to be pee pad trained at 9 months and that is all we use. I buy the human type of pads at Sams Club and have found them to be the most reasonable. Good luck. |
Pee Pad Tips Liberty has a hard plastic pee pad holder. We used to put pee pads on it but Liberty would only use it once or twice as he is a " dainty thang" who doesn't like to chance getting his feet wet. It became awfully expensive, so now we collect newspapers & trade sheets and I can easily just change that several times a day. We practice intermittent reinforcement by offering a crazy amount of praise occassionally & tiny piece of treat. So now, Liberty loves to use his pad! The pad is very handy when I am recovering from one of my many surgeries. He knows to try to urinate on command on walks because he's given the same words that are used during praise. It is amazing how much they understand. Liberty know that chances are I am going out when he hears me use my automated bank system on the cell phone and he starts running around. Am going to have to start spelling or use French because he understands key words! LOL. Enjoy your baby!!!!!! |
Our Katie Scarlett is pee pad trained and does very well with it. She caught on very quickly. She rarely ever has an accident now. We use the Potty Training Puppy Apartment system. It was on the pricey side, but it has been one of the best purchases we have made. I buy the pads at Tractor Supply in a box of 100 for $20. We change the pad every day. Katie Scarlett will pee and poop on it. After each poop, I will go pick it up with a tissue and flush it. We do take the PTPA with us when we travel by car, but not by plane. When we travel by plane (which is almost always to our parents house), I use one of those plastic clip in trays that you can buy. I got it at Wal Mart. Katie Scarlett does seem to sort of wander off the pad on these though. She may start going on them, but then walk off and do the rest of her business on the other. I am not sure if it's because it's just a change or what, but we love the PTPA. It does have a little space for a bedroom in it, but we have now taken the divider out. She either sleeps with us or in her big girl bed and only uses it for potty time. |
