I need advice! New puppyy I just got a teacup Yorkie four days ago and I'm afraid he is going to be a mean doggy :( First of all, I have a German Shepard mix and she is the sweetest dog in the entire world. She listens very well, and she always has- she is extremely smart. I have had her for almost a year now. Well I brought this 6 week old Male Yorkie home Saturday, and my German Shepard wants to play with him, but my Yorkie is so aggressive that she can't. My Yorkie just kinda barks and bites at him. It's like he goes crazy and barks and bites and when I try to get him to stop he just goes even more crazy and will bite me! I took my baby Yorkie to a friend house the other day who also has a little yorkie mix and my Yorkie wanted NOTHING to do with him. He just kinda snapped and wasn't very frienldly and once again I tried stopping my Yorkie because it was embarrassing and my Yorkie went crazy and kinda snapped at me. This probably makes him sound like a very mean dog, but other than that he is so sweet. He sleeps with me and he loves when I hold him and other people hold him. I could be totally wrong here, but I'm thinking maybe it because he is trying to protect himself cause he knows he is such a small dog. I also don't like the fact that he gets aggressive towards me when I try to put him in place. If you have any suggestions that would be LOVELY! |
First, I don't think you have a mean puppy. You didn't mention his age but I'm presuming he's a pup/young. Second, yorkies are prone to becoming stressed. In a new environment, your baby could be reacting to stress and fear. Introducing your small pup to other dogs or even people is good but it should be done carefully. When we first got Lucy, my kids' friends would follow her around and grab at her fur and cheeks -- it drove me crazy. It also freaked Lucy out a bit! She's now a lot more tentative when it comes to other humans. I really can't blame her. As I explained to my kids, imagine your just walking along and all of a sudden 4 or 5 big hands swoop down and start pawing at your face! No body would like that! How utterly annoying and fear provoking. Now, likewise, placing a small puppy along side a large German Shepard (from the yorkie's perspective) must indeed be stressful. I think your baby may have been afraid. Expecting an immediate bond and friendship between the two pets may be unrealistic. More gentle introductions may be warranted - especially for smaller yorkies. If your puppy remains upset and afraid, you should probably speak to the vet or even a good trainer. Good luck. |
Odd that a six week old puppy would act like this do you mean six months? A puppy at six weeks is hardly "all that"....a six week old puppy is too young to be away from its mother. Who/where did you get your pup from? |

Poor baby is probably very scared...he is in a new environment, and should really not be around other animals until fully vaccinated...have some Nurtri Cal or Karo Syrup on hand..this will combat low blood sugar should the need arise. Someone more knowledgable will give you more information on puppies this young. Forgot, sorry Congratulations and welcome to YT! What is your babies' name...please post pics...we love pics here...:D |
Hi welcome to YT! I notice you said he is 6 weeks, but wanted to confirm that age? That could be some of the reason that he is biting and snapping, because if I'm not mistaken this would be about the time mom would start enforcing manners. I am sure more experienced YTers will chime in here and give some advice. There are several threads here also on biting etc. If I may offer another piece of advice if he is 6 weeks old, please don't take him around any other pets until he has had all his puppy shots. I know it is quite tempting to take him when you go out or to your friends, but at his age his little system just isn't protected. Again welcome to YT:) |

This definitely does not sound like a 6 week old puppy... Please tell me you mean 6 months? |
I am very sorry to say this but I believe you breeder might have lied to you about a teacup see that's a thing you drink out of not a yorkie pup and I don't think your pup is 6 weeks because I don't think I 6 week old pup would act like that. If you pup is 6 weeks first off don't take your pup any where especially around other dogs and places other dogs go because your pup could get very sick and die. Also it is very important you do research about hypoglycemia and not leave this pup alone for more then an hour until a few months older. Please also make sure you do not leave your bigger dog and your pup alone together because your pup might get hurt. In the future yorkies should not leave there moms until 12 weeks old. |
Yorkies are a toy breed dog. They start out much smaller than most dogs. A 6 week old puppy would hardly be weaned. Mother dogs should be starting to wean at 5 weeks but it should be done as a process. It is not something that is done quickly. Puppies learn their social skills, like about wrestling and biting, for their mother and other litter mates. When they are taken from the mom at such a young age they never lean about bit inhibition and other interactions. A 6 week old toy breed puppy is at risk going places. It does not have immunity build up and can pick up diseases easily. Should be kept indoors and away from other dogs. I would assume this puppy is very afraid at this point and is feeling very defensive around other dogs. What do you do to put this baby "in line?" |
A new yorkie pup shouldnt be expected to be buddies with a german sshepard. you need to keep them separated for the yorkies safety |
Sorry... I presumed that the pup was 6 mos or so. At 6 weeks the pup shouldn't be around other dogs or carted off around lots of people either. Should be with the mom. However, what's done is done. Please keep the baby away from other animals until after all vaccines. Don't over stress or frighten the baby either. It's a really big world to a little yorkie baby. |
