Question about UABR?
 
I wondered if anyone here is familiar with that registry?

I found this on Yahoo: Neither registry is well respected in the dog world. These are just papermill registries for puppymill and other dogs not eligible for AKC or UKC registrations.

Out of curiosity I went to the website of the breeder I bought from and all their pups are registered with UABR. Why would someone change from AKC to this registry?

You're right, all these alternative registries are considered paper registries. If a breed is eligible to be registered with the AKC and the breeder isn't registered with them, it's a huge red flag. The AKC is the only legitimate registry in the USA. A breeder can sell their puppies with limited registration, meaning no breeding rights and offspring cannot be registered with the AKC and unscrupulous people can simply register the offspring with the alternative registries and tell people this is just as good as the AKC. Well it isn't. Also, the AKC has kicked out many breeders because of various problems, so commercial breeders even started some of the alternative registries. Just because a breeder is with the AKC, it doesn't mean they are reputable, but if they aren't with them, the dog may not be a purebred or they got their breeding dogs in a crooked way. Anyone can start up a registry. You send me $25.00, I’ll register your dog with my registry! :p

People don't leave the AKC, they are kicked out, or the offspring isn't eligible.

Thanks. My first thought was maybe they got kicked out of AKC. I know that's the paperwork I was given. I never filed it because I had no plans of breeding. The only dogs listed as AKC on their site are a couple of sires and dams.

ALL the pups are UABR.

That makes me think the breeder bought dogs with limited registration, and he has no breeding rights. That the same as stealing!

Some "alternative registries" are even starting to have show competitions for the pets. I've seen yorkie listings for "champion sired" pups where the championship came from one of the newbie registries. It's marketing.

You may remember that my Cooper had Legg Perthes which was determined to be genetic. I'm not positive because I don't have any paperwork with me at the moment but I think they're still breeding his sire.

There are breeds like Biewers who aren't eligible for the AKC yet and have their own registries and events for showing. This would be different than a breed who is eligible to be registered, and it would mean these breeders are simply trying to mislead the public. You don’t produce a champ, so that the offspring will seem more valuable.

I think breeders who do that are beyond cruel, so many people can't afford to give the dog the sugery it needs, and they end up in rescue.

It is very expensive surgery. I'm still paying for it & he's 3 years old in Nov.

Have you thought about taking the breeder to small claims court? I've heard that it's either genetic or caused during the birthing process, either way, it's the breeder's responsibility.

I was refunded what I paid for him but only after I threatened with FL Pet Lemon Law. I paid for the surgery with a credit card. Slow business means minimum payments. ;)

I love Biewers (and looking for a baby now!) and understand what you're saying. However, I've seen ads showing APRI Champions & displaying dams/sires with ribbons and all. Sometimes those "champions" don't resemble their AKC counterparts and are frankly poor examples of the breed.

Sorry this happened to you. I know many reputable breeders who would pay for the surgery. I'm glad you were able to find a way to get the surgery, I feel so bad for those pet owners who have to give their dogs to a rescue.

He seems to be fine now. I've been told they generally develop a problem with both hips but so far it's only one. I wish I could help him with his anxiety, I've tried 2 different meds & a Thundershirt. The combination does help with travel anxiety, he shakes and pants without it.
