Dexter is chewing on his front paes.
 
We washed his feet, but he is chewing on the front paws. We scheduled a visit to the vet to check this out. He is 1 year old.

Anyone else seen this?

I would suspect allergies as this paw chewing/licking is a cardinal sign. Did you change food or anything else? Most likely, it's enviro/seasonal/inhalant allergies...check your pollen count too, here: www.pollen.com

We feed Dexter Royal Canine. The Vet looked at him today and said it's not bad, and it may take 2 months to find out if the new. He also said try some of the bitter stuff from petco on his paws.

It doesn't sound good to put something bitter on his pads if they really itch. Don't they have a topical treatment they can give him to relieve the itching? Itching feet is a symptom of allergies. The mouth is the only thing they have to itch their paws with. Maybe using one of the regular paw pad treatments would help him.

I agree here Bitter Apple is trying to treat a symptom and not the problem. If the skin is irritated and itching I would worry Bitter apple or other chew deterent would make it worse. Relieving the itch would be the way to go. You can try making a baking soda paste rub that in. rinse dry. Then take some liquid benedryl but instead of giving it orally, rub it into the feet to relieve the itching. I have a almost 6 year old YOrkie that has allergy issues and the best thing I found for her feet itching is Surolan which is actually for treating ears but works great on hot spots, itching that sort of thing.
Allergy issues are common to show up from about 1 - 3 years of age. Also I find Royal Canine not to be a good food at all, protein level is way too high.
At a year old he doesn't need a high protein. You might want to check out other Vet foods for allergies. It may be a try this try that until you figure out what is the trigger and if it is indeed food related.

Thanks for the replies. The only evidence he is chewing on his feet us between his little nails/toes the area is a little red. Nothing on top of his feet.

What food should we try next?
Should we mix a little canned food?
Which one?

It could be red from him chewing on it but something is making his skin itch. If it is at the nail bed and that looks a little swollen could be a little infection or yeast. Not tinned food, it is terrible stuff and almost all of them contain liver which most dogs cannot tolerate very well and often is the allergen.
I would try the hypoallergenic from your Vet clinic.
Natural Balance makes some Limited Ingredient ones but they are not so good anymore. I am not sure what other brands make Limited ingredient ie: one source of a meat protein either chicken or lamb or beef or some exotic types of meat. If you try one and there is stilla probem, could be that meat source or it could be the preservatives in dog food. Unfortunately there are many variables in dealing with allergy issues if it is food at all.
Grasses are often an allergen in some dogs or something that is currently blooming.

I was looking at limited ingredient foods a few days ago and I have to agree they did not look great. Some of the ingredients are items that have caused allergies.

I agree with the other replies here. It could be allergies related to grains, etc in the diet. The licking and constant wetness of the paws can lead to another problem such as red yeast. If you see the fur on the paws starting to turn a reddish brown, then red yeast is present. A good shampoo to help with itchy paws is Paul Mitchell shampoo for dogs with tea tree oil.
