Crate anxiety/Kong ideas :animal-paBenny boy just got home from his first visit to the vet. She says he is a healthy little boy off to a great start. The concern I expressed is the crate anxiety when we leave in the am. He cries and cries and he's just so sad. She suggested that I use a Kong filled with something yummy to eat for the transition and then give him this so he has something to look forward to when we go. Seems like a good idea except he's not crazy about his kibble. She told me to water it down so it gets soft and then stuff it in the kong and freeze it. I will try this but in case he doesn't like it do you have any other delicious Kong ideas? For that matter any other ideas to lessen his crate anxiety. The mornings can be an absolute madhouse trying to get the kids off to school and us out the door for work. Benny is figuring this out and he runs away from us now too when we need to put him in the crate. Can you just picture this? Thank goodness I work part time! We do play music for him too FYI. Thanks all!:animal36 |
Routine is very important. I suggest gaiting him in a small room, perhaps a bathroom (lid down please and trash can up) or other small room. A beloved treat will work best and he will run to his cage every time....mind you it can be the size of a dime! It doesn't have to be a kong etc.... |
Joel didnt care about any kong stuff when he was little, not even peanut butter. Maybe you could set up a gated room with lots of blankets and toys:) |
I agree use his favorite treats. But if you want something to put in his kong either 1/2 plain yogurt and 1/2 pumpkin, mix it together put it in the kong or you can get the kong shaped ice cube tray and freeze it. That way you can make a number of them at a time. And keep them in the freezer to use anytime you need one. Or you can use peanut butter and freeze it. It lasts longer that way ;) |
Jaeger did this too, and when he was really little, it didnt matter WHAT we gave him. We used to put him in a room by himself, which just made him hate that room. We had to shut the door because he could jump the doggie gates. We moved his crate in the front hallways so he could have a first row seat when we came home. It seemed to help. We give him kongs stuffed with pb, light cream cheese, meatybones, orbully sticks to keep him busy. Freezing definately helps. I wouldnt put little pieces of fruit and etc in like some vets/websites suggest just because the kongs for yorkies are too tiny. |
Sophie likes anything in her Kong. We sometimes use kibble and small broken treat pieces or carrot and make a little Kong cocktail for her. We have put a pinch of shredded cheese on top and a lot of just plain ol' Kong Treats. |
Mine do better with the tv on they like talking voices or respond better to than music. Talk radio might work too. Always curious if others noticed talk vs sing for dogs. I filled Kong's with Zukes mini naturals so when it spills out they play with the peices a bit. Some ppl freeze greek yogurt in kongs too. |
