Afraid of windshield wipers. My Trinket is 5 months old. We had her out for a ride to the vet. It was raining lightly, so hubby had the wipers on delay. Those suckers came on and about scared the patoot out of her. I was holding her as we don`t have a car seat yet. She clawed, shook, tried to get into the back seat. When we got to the vet, she was calmed down. They rescue animals there and they had some kittens in a crate. All of a sudden, one jumped up on a shelf in the crate and made a loud noise. Trinket did it all again. Scared her something awful. Any ideas as to what to do to help her with this? |
Callie nearly died the first time we did the wind shield wipers when she was a pup to but she has gotten used to them now. Trinket is just a pup and all this stuff is new to her so some of it is going to seem scary just be there with her and let her experience safely as much different stuff as you can. |
gradual exposure to things will help, and over time get better, she is still young and probably been very sheltered before you got her. Word of advice though, don't go through any drive thru car washes with her in the near future. |
You could just slowly desensitize her to the windshield wipers by turning them on briefly while you are feeding her some really nice boiled chicken or something equally high-value to her - but only turn them on and immediately off, then bring her in the house. Just repeat that a few times over time as she gets some very nice food and her doggie interest in the food should override her fear if she has a normal fear response. In time, as she gets older and more exposed to all kinds of different sounds, circumstances and places, she should adjust to accepting new situations better. If she doesn't, you'll have to go slower in desensitizing her to things like the wipers & other things like that. The more you can get her out and about in public with cars whizzing by, honking horns, kids yelling, car doors banging shut, dogs barking at her and music playing on the radio - things like that, the faster she should adjust. Let her meet lots of people and other dogs and be sure to have some ready treats or a squeaky toy handy so that you can make the experience outside the house a positive one if she's a little shaky at times during her socialization. |
I had this very same issue with my little Macaela.....we turned the wipers off....I held her and got her calmed down....then, we turned them back on slowly, not intermittant but on slow continous, and shegot over it very quickly...it seemed it was the unexpected movment of the wipers that was the instigator of her fear...once they were on continously, moving slowly, she was able to get a "fix" on them, and see that they were NOT going to suddenly jump up and get her. |
Good luck because mine seems to be getting worse! Tia will be three years in January and has become terrified of flies....yes...flies. They don't bother her outside, but if she is inside and sees/hears one, she will run upstairs to hide. She finds them before I do too. If she starts to hide, I have to search the house and kill it. She does have the normal fear of loud noises like fireworks, thunder, and even the click of a bb gun. She trembles with fear and I can't find anything to help her thru it. Ally, on the other hand, seems to be a little fearful of the loud noises, but you really don't notice it in her. Just say the word, 'squirrel' and she'll snap to attention! lol |
I agree. Putting them on slow and letting her be able to see them. Bring a nice tasty treat too will help |

Remember everything is new to her :) Over time, with exposure... She won't react as much. Just continue to expose her to as much as possible (as long as she has had her vaccinations), and she will be a socialized adult. |
