Shanti was crated until potty trained and not chewing things. Maxximus has a play yard. RIP cell phone charger |
How many potty pads do you have down at one time and in one place? Just curious.:) |
I have a Chihuahua and a Yorkie and although they are restricted, they have never been crated. I'm pretty sure they do a whole lot of sleeping when we aren't home but neither one has ever been destructive. My Chihuahua is about 11years old and my Yorkie is almost 2 years old. I am glad they have each other for company.........I think they are less likely to get into mischief that way! |
Joel is crated when i'm gone but he doesnt chew things. I feel like the one time I let him roam something will happen, lol |
Neither of mine are crated in the house. They are both 2 yrs old and have had the run of the hse since 5 mos. All they seem to do is sleep when I am gone. |
If info somewhere and Harley can't go, he goes in his crate when left alone, and at night he sleeps on the bed with us as our other dog gets to have free reign at night as well |

Both my guys have access to most of the house 24/7. I don't let them in the Computer Room, and I close the Doggy Door for a few hours in the evening. I have a resident Possum and old Yellow Cat (stray) who stroll through each evening for a snack. Other than that, they run back and forth from the second Floor "Observation" windows, all the way out to the end of the property MANY times a day. |
Most of the time someone is here, if they won't be, Yumi is crated Yuri is free, but not in the same area as Yumi's crate (because that just seems mean). Yuri Does great free, Yumi just isn't trustworthy yet. At night Yuri sleeps with us Yumi sleeps in her crate. We tried letting Yumi sleep with us but apparently our bed is big enough for a sleeping place and a potty place in Yumi's mind lol. I really hope she can sleep with us later! |
I put Khloe and Kirby in the crate when I am out. Kirby is 8 years old and Khloe is 10 months . I don't want them to have any accidents or get into something while I am away. |
Roxie roams now, but it took us a little while to get there. When we first got her she was nearly 3 years old and came with a crate. We crated her while we were out because her previous owner said that's what she did. But, then I felt bad being out for so long and having Roxie in the crate with no water or anything. Then she got weird about her crate and would bite if either of us tried to put her in there. We ditched the crate. We then gated her in the kitchen while we were out. Her food and water were in there. She did well with that, until we got tired of climbing over gates and the walls were damaged from them. We finally decided to try leaving her to roam free while we were out. First for small amounts of time, and then working our way up to the whole work day. She stays on the main floor where the living room, kitchen, and front hallway are. She does not go upstairs where the bedrooms are. She is afraid of the stairs. We've been lucky. Roxie doesn't chew or scratch anything, and she's only ever had a handful of accidents (usually when she's not been feeling well). She generally sleeps on the couch the whole time we're out. However, we do always make sure that we don't leave anything out that she could possibly eat or chew or get hurt by. |
I've let my bichon roam since she was pup, she's just always been so well behaved. Max on the other hand... yea... I didn't let him start having free roam until about 11 months. Now they both have free roam and don't really get into anything while I'm gone. |
Kaji gets free roam when I'm away. We started with my room, added the hallway, and eventually he got the whole apt. I did have to take back the kitchen when I kept finding the trash all over the floor. Other than the kitchen, nothing is off limits. Ok... That is until recently. Kaji has started to poop in my room as soon as I leave for work. I crate him before I leave, and my mom lets him out to have free roam after she's done with work. I'm hoping we don't have to do this forever, and Kaji can earn his free roam again. |

My guys have a job. And that's making sure that I'm aware of any intrusion onto the property. I count heavily on their alertness, hearing, eyes, noses and voices, to keep me "safer". I never scold them for barking, they know that as long as there is something out there, they bark like crazy, until I gently shush them, and still give um a little pet for their effort, even if they barked at the wrong thing. It's high praise when they're right. I sleep a LOT better, knowing my two little buddies have my back. ;) My two are completely Potty Trained, but IF there was an occasional accident (potty) I not entirely sure that I wouldn't just let it slide, and attempt to make that minor correction, without interfering with their routine. |

A good walk or play time before leaving is always good.. usually just sleeps after. Then again - I am only in a 2 bedroom apartment - not a large house. He has access to the entire place. |
Mine get crated....but realize their crate area is like 14sf. For several reasons, safety, people come and go from our yard and house and I want to ensure mine don't get let outside or loose, Princess eats random stuff, Scoobers has separation anxiety, Elvis has epilepsy all are safer in a secure danger proof area. They do best all together now, I tried putting them in a room but this stressed them more than just being in the den area. Also we have earthquakes here their crate which is 3 crates attached is safest. They're rarely ever left more than 4 hours so usually they just nap anyways. |

At home alone training is really based on making your home safe, giving them toys abd starting with a small area and expanding. I always started in the most safe room whereever that may be and then allow for another room or if you have large open areas try sectioning it off abd opening it up. Also do you kennel at bed time? I do so kenneling during the day for mine is just nap time. Major inhibitors (these are what I have dealt with personally) Ie if your dog chews for example cords when you are home you should not leave them unattended with acess. Or any other random plastic, wood, ... Princess also has bladder leakage since her spay only while she sleeps which is in her crate. If your dog panics when you leave and will climbs and jump off furnite counters to claw at eindows or chew at doors, they should be in a panic safe area. If your dog has seizures that can start with your dog going into a dead bolt run or falling helplessly between furniture unable to establish motor control a padded crate area is more likely safer. |
when we leave, we put morgan in his puppy playpen with some toys and water and he has a bed in there but we dont leave him very often |
