Can dogs say "thank you"? When I give Mia a fresh drink, a little treat, or hand feed her something, she always gives me two quick little happy licks on my hand, arm or leg before walking away. I swear, it's as if she is saying "thank you, mommy" before going happily on her way. At least that's what I always say she is doing. It got me to thinking. Does a dog really have the capacity to conceptualize the words "thank you"? I know we all say a rescue dog is grateful when he is taken from a bad situation, but that's not quite the same thing. In your opinion can a dog understand "thank you"? If not, then what is she doing? I clearly know when she is licking the scraps off my fingers, or when she is grooming me, and this is clearly a different kind of licking. It's kind of similar in concept to what some people call "dog kisses". What's your opinion, and does anyone else's baby do something like this? It really doesn't matter, but it's just so sweet, and it's something I was just wondering about. :bleh: |
I think they can show appreciation |
I absolutly think our furbabies show their appreciation :) |
absolutly...mine do this and I believe they are sayin 'thanks momma'... |
I believe so.... I mean not necessarily that they know the English words for "thank you" and it's definition, lol... but I do think they show appreciation. Jackson is NOT a kisser. He hardly ever does. And it's so cute, he tends to give me a few licks on the arm after a fun day (i.e. going to the park etc) and I really do believe it's like him saying thank you. However... my dads dog, Lilly... she will lick you and lick you for ever and ever. It's more like an obsessive habit lol, so no I do not believe she is showing her appreciation. |
Oh I think they do, the licking is her affection to you. Her 'Thank You!" in my opinion Josie licks thats her thank you, I love you! Jack tries, he is no licker, but I know when he says thank you, just his looks! He has a happy smile and a little wag lets me know. |
I believe that they are thankful for the love and care that they get, whether or not they understand the words. They show it in so many ways:D |
I vote YES. Yorkies can and do express thank you. The little stinkers can also cuss. |

:thumbup: and :thumbup:...and you will know which they are doing (thanking :D or cussing  )! :yelrotflm |
Yes! My boys are like Mia and lick my hand when I put their food or water bowls down, or when I hand them a treat, and when we are going out the door for a walk. They also sit beside me after these things and look up with grateful eyes. I'm convinced they are thanking me. :) |
I know Waffles says thank you to me.. She also nuges me on the leg with her nose when she wants to go for a car ride. She then sits in the rear seat and talks. Shes a hoot! |
I think they can show appreciation and I think they also understand good manners. People laugh at me but whenever either Sophie Kate or Avery do as they are told I always say "Thank you". I also never use no but instead add a Ma'am or Sir". Avery were make a little purring meow sound when I feed him, I like to think he is thanking me. |
When it licks your Face, it's a traditional gesture toward it's provider to regurgitate food. |
Oh, I think they know and feel gratitude & appreciation, for sure. My Lexie is NOT a licker at all! She so rarely does it, that I know it's a love thing. She does it so softly, then looks up at me so lovingly, it's obvious!! I just love her sweet little kisses! |
I know they can definitely say I love you! Watch Mishka saying I love you! |
