2 dogs only...
 

The other day I went to license my girls in our new Town. I was told then that there are only 2 dogs permitted per residence. This has me freaking out...I can't back out now, and of course I wouldn't but surely theres a way around it? I was so hoping to get a third pup this year...a healthy one to add to my little family, this is crazy...just sayin...

I am guessing this 2 dogs limit is because of all the jerks in the world that don't take proper care of their animals. :thumbdown. I don't know a way around it but I'm sure someone would lol. I live in the country so they don't care how many pets we have. :p. Good luck on that third baby. ;)

If you get a kennel license you can have more than 2 thats the only way I know to get around it

These type of local laws concerning pets are becoming more and more common. I suppose they may think they are keeping out backyard breeders but that is not always the case. There is a town near me that has made it illegal for your cat to go outside. Personally, I assume they will be over run with rodents in a short amount of time. Certain breeds are forbidden now as well.

Of course they are also regulating what people can eat and how much soda they can buy. I think this is getting out of hand.

I have not gotten Gracie a license yet and she is now 2 years old. We do live outside of town and so far no one has come to my door to ask. Really, your only option is to get another dog and just not license it but you have to wonder if your neighbors will tell on you. They may not be aware of the law either though.

It's sad. With all the dogs that need homes it would be nice if people who want to could add a couple of dogs to their homes to help out.

I have spent the last 3 to 4 years spaying and neutering as well as feeding the cats that get dumped in my wooded area. We have had a few dogs that we have been able to find homes for but the cat situation was out of control. They would get old enough to breed and then if the kittens survived they would be too wild to catch once they came out in the open and would either freeze to death in the winter or be eaten by predators. Our local mostly no kill shelter is almost always full but I do take advantage of their low cost spay and neuter program. But I digress. Hope you can figure out a way to get another one.

Watch your local elections and make sure what their views are on pets as well as other issues. I think some are getting power crazy about telling people what they can do with their personal property.

I agree it is getting out of hand too much meddling in our business under the rouse of protcting us from ourselves time for change

I'm always amazed when I see people here on YT (non-breeders) with a bunch of dogs & wonder where they live. Our locality limits the number per residence too.

I believe our local laws say we can own four dogs. Two seems a little extreme, but it probably helps keep people from getting in over their heads with animals. The city does go around and check houses for licensed dogs, but you could say you are dogsitting the third one? :p May not be the best idea, but it could help you get around the limit. I would call up the city to see what it takes to get a kennel license.

I think this is what I would try...got a friend or family member who would like to "own" a dog...you could license the dog to the family member, and then they could "stay" with you. Our rules are 5 dogs (I believe), but I know a small breeder that used to have 8 dogs...because of the nature of their breed (Cesky terriers), the dogs look very similar...they would rotate their outside time and make sure they never had more than 4 dogs out at once...As far as I know, the neighbours never guessed :) But felt the dogs were getting plenty of outside time!

That is quite the plan! I guess that breeder must have had quite the system;)

I'm in Ontario as well...I checked the by-laws for the city of Toronto and they said any combination a total of 6....now I have no idea if that is just toronto or the gta or what? The breeder i got Raelle and Orion from is in Kawartha Lakes and she told me no limit...she had eight dogs and two cats...Two as a total limit is a bit much I think. C'mon TWO??

Our city has a 3 dog limit and I am thrilled. I live next door to a woman who would have had 10 dogs when she was younger and would have let them all out in the back where she wouldn't hear any of their barking, whining, carrying on for hours - but I would. She had 2 dogs who practically barked nonstop (and the 3rd dog barked normally) for 3 years and every way I tried to get her to keep the dogs quiet, letters, Animal Control, phone calls - none of it worked until one day I confronted her about the dogs' barking(they had barked that day for over 30 minutes without anything but the briefest pause) and I was trying to study. That visit to her followed by Environmental Control coming out finally did it and she began to train the dogs. Now they are well-behaved dogs who bark like regular dogs and then move on with their lives. But before training, they would sit and bark and after 3 hours of it, you could go crazy! All day long, all evening, obsessive, constant for hours with only brief pauses and back to barking. She had 3 dogs who were out a lot and kept a 4th in the house and thought rotating letting the dogs out would somehow hide the 4th, I guess. And her house was filled with several cats, too. Finally though, after that confrontation and the visit from the city official, she has cut down to only the 2 dogs who are very normal dogs now, barking at the garbage truck, postman, someone walking in the alley, but then they stop in a normal time frame. But in her heyday, I swear she would have had all the dogs she could and I fear, wouldn't have cared how much trouble they were to the neighbors before her change.

Our mayor wrote a newsletter stating the reason we could have no more than 3 dogs is that is usually all one normal person can handle without causing problems in the neighborhood. I fear he was right as some people just cannot handle a lot of dogs very well and if you are unlucky enough to live next door to someone like that, you are thankful for rules!

I know of a lady who lived next to bikers who had 4 or 5 German Shepherd Dogs and only a Cox fence. She said the dogs were constantly barking day and night in those loud, deep GSD's voices, kept all the grass from growing in their yard from their constant pacing and it was so unsightly just living next to a house with a dirt yard. She said the GSD's jumped the fence into her yard frequently and were often running free out front. She said she could barely leave her house some days because of snarling GSD's at her doors and Animal Control only visited, gave warnings and slunk off. She said when she confronted one of the bikers, a day or so later, when she was gardening, he walked over, put his hand across the back of her neck and dug in and told her what they would do to her if she EVER complained of the dogs again.

I think that is why some cities and towns have to have rules to inhibit dog ownership as it can just get so out of hand with some people.

I thought for Toronto it was only 3 dogs allowed out of the six pet total? But I am in Etobicoke so maybe that makes a difference.

I know of two breeder friends of mine, that deliberately moved out of Toronto area so that they could legally have more dogs.

With my neighbours there is no way I'd get away with trying to fool them, on the number of animals we have. :(

I'm trying to find info on this for Whitby...cant find it anywhere...I will have to call the town tomorrow. I thought i read on the Toronto site any combo, but with a 6 pet limit...I'll recheck. Regardless I have six pets so I'm at my limit! :( That is until my son moves and takes his cat! :rolleyes: I would have houseful of these guys (yorkies) if I could...geez could I love this breed any more?!

I understand the reasons they have this law, I really do, however; I for one don't think a blanket ban benefits anyone...of course there are hoarders etc., but couldn't they say something like a limit of 3 large dogs, 5 small dogs...if we get complaints first 1 a warning, 2nd one a hefty fine and 3rd your out?

Hell I just found out we are not permitted to have bird feeders, wth? Garbage goes in town provided totes so whats the big deal with that...now the important thing/story:

My new neighbors are very nice, around 50ish..55ish...so close to my age...anyways, they asked me if "while your on that step ladder could you see if that lady 3 yards down still has a bird feeder in her yard?" mind you 3 yards down is 6 privacy fences down...:eek: Of course I said NO...but really? :eek::eek: First line of order when I get in is to get that privacy fence that covers 3/4 of my yard extended to cover the portion thats open to theirs...I will then have a fully fenced yard...wth???

p.s. My Mom would love a Yorkie, she lives down the street:eek::eek::eek: from my new house...perhaps I will have to dogsit for her:D

They have a two limit rule bc if you want to have more, you have to pay up. Or of you get caught you have to pay up. Comes down to money and fines. I don't think it will do anything to deter hoarders. Those people don't follow rules or common sense anyway.
