cotton coat Hi there. . . I have a cotton coat yorkie. She is about to turn 7 months. I do not understand she is a cotton coat but I never got a single knot on her. I know she is a cotton because her eyes shine red and her coat has not change (it is still black). So what coat does she have? Thanks. . . |
I dont go along with the eye shine theory if it doesnt matt its eeither silk or modified silk |
I'm not an expert and can only base my humble opinion on my own experience and judgment. Whether a dog gets mats would be based on different factors (coat length, brushing frequency, & of course coat type). You don't specify any. I mean, maybe she doesn't mat because she has short hair and/or you brush her well enough :) I wouldn't rely solely on coat color to know the type of coat. She's still young. If you could post a picture maybe we can get a better idea of her coat ;) |
I'm no yorkie expert and mine is only half, but his eyes shine green and his coat is cottony. |
You may find the sticky Yorkie Coats, Colors, and Puppy Growth Chart Thread interesting and very informative. It's well done and will answer a ton of questions you may have.:) |
1 Attachment(s) Here is a picture of her this is the best i can do. I think she is modified silky. |
My babies eyes shone red/orange too, bit she has a silk coat. It is long and I brush her every day, but sometimes I have to skip a day when I am out of town and it still doesn't mat. I was all uptight when I read the eye color thing when she was a baby, but now I realize that isn't always 100% true. Her color hasn't really changes much either and she is almost 9 months old. |
adult coat I was under the impression that most yorkies are close to 2 yrs before their adult coat grows in. My Timmy is 7 mos now and his coat for the most part is the same texture as it was as a younger puppy. The hair on his back is still black, while his head and neck have turned silver. |
The color changes but usually not the texture |

2 Attachment(s) Because Jaeger is part daschund, he doesnt have the long coat of a purebred yorkie. I dont need to trim him except sometimes the hair near his eyes, but his hair will stand straight up if I style it. |
1 Attachment(s) I am told my Sophie has a modified cotton coat. She is so soft . I keep her in a puppy cut but if it gets a little too long it will get just a tad wavy. |
Hmmmmm. Interesting. I didn't realize that the coat texture didn't change. Timmy's hair on his head and legs is completely different than the hair on his back. Which is a little rougher. It does lay flat and naturally parts down his back. But it doesn't feel as soft as the hair on his head and legs. So it'll always be that way? |
confused Can someone please clarify about adult coat texture? I have read so much differing info here on yorkie talk. There are threads dating from back in '07 with many posters stating that the hair does in fact change in texture. Can someone with experience please weigh in on this? |
