lavender oil for claiming effect my yorkie and yorkie mix are very hyper when we have company, traveling or if we have to leave them if only for a few minutes,I have heard that lavender oil would help.But wondering it anyone has tried it and how it worked for you:aimeeyork |
Never heard of it. How old are your babies? Maybe before you have company you can take them on a nice long walk, or let them go run around some where safe to get some of that energy out? Generally I think Yorkies- smaller dogs are a little more hyper than your medium size or large breed. What do they do when you are traveling? They are probably just excited that they get to go somewhere..? I know that is how my dog is. I understand the hyperness, I can leave for 10 mins I will come home and Peanut acts like I was gone for 3 hours or something- it is really cute but he will jump all around and follow me everywhere until I sit down and see him for a couple minutes. |
I haven't heard of that either, but it sounds interesting. I would like to know as well. There are times when KS is a wee bit too hyper when we have company. LOL. |
Lavender in general is suppose to have a calming effect. I have never before heard if it could calm our puppies. Maybe you could purchase a few lavender candles, see if they have any effect on them. If they don't, you still will have a lovely smelling room. |
Yup, it can be calming, but I don't know if it's all that calming for doggies who are amped up. It's more like for helping you relax and/or there are lavender pillows you can use at night to supposedly help you relax and rest better. Some people spray their pillows w/ lavender spray. Just thinking out loud, but maybe Thundershirts? Or Melatonin prior to an anxious event? DAP collars? Do you think they're actually anxious or just excited? |
I know lavander oil calms me. I use it in my bath when I'm feeling stressful and I have a spray for my sheets. It's very soothing. I don't see why it wouldn't work on dogs. I use Aura Cacia. You can get it at Whole Foods. Let us know if you try it and if it helps. |

The physical therapist that we take Seymour to (and we also took Shelby there) uses lavender oil. It is not just a "Scent" but genuine lavender oil from GNC. She puts a dab between her 2 fingers and rubs her fingers together and then rubs it on the tips of his ears and also on his forehead. It DOES help with calming!!! A little goes a long way!!!! She said that it can also be used for dogs that need a little extra something when traveling or even if afraid of storms. I like it because it seems to help during the therapy sessions AND makes the ride home very pleasant smelling! :D Remember it is NOT to be used or given orally!!!! |
Going on a nine hour road trip with Buster and Maggie and he does not ride well in a car, in the back seat. He will have to ride in the back seat for the road trip. Last year I gave him AcePro, didn't phase him. On the return trip I gave him Dramamine, it helped a little bit. I have Valium and AcePro but really don't want to give him either of those. But I don't want him screeching and yelling for nine hours, it stresses him so bad, not to mention the humans. We don't leave until Sunday, I'll go to GNC tomorrow. I will try anything to help him not be so stressed. I've tried Rescue Remedy and the Thunder Shirt...those don't do anything for him. |
Be sure to use "real" lavender oil, if you use it. It should not be taken internally. It can be mixed with a "carrier oil" such as almond oil. As with all essential oils, the tiniest bit would be what I'd use...it is very potent. It may work...it is known to have a calming effect...not sure how it would work with Yorkies for calming. I use it for lots of reasons, sunburn, being the main one, insect bites, etc., but have only recently learned to 'appreciate' the scent although it is a main ingredient in aroma therapy and as a massage oil mixed in a carrier. lol I hope you find something that works for your baby. |
