Advice please on food Ok cocoa is about nine months old and since i got her she has been on puppy chow and i know it is not the best brand but its what she came to me eating. She has gotten pickier over the last few weeks and i dont think she has eaten more than a few bites. It may be time to move her to adult food but is tgere a walmart type brand that is ok for them to eat. Please dont be judgemental because i said walmart type. Im not rich, we live in a small town and i just want to do the best i can for her with what i have. |
I live in a small town too, our closest Pet store is about 25 miles away. What I do is make a trip every 2-3 months to Petsmart or Petco and buy a nice big bag or 2 or 3 of high quality food. They do have sales, and COUPONS in the sunday paper quite frequently!! Remember a fairly small bag of HIGH quality food means they eat less and POOP less too!!!! Yorkies are not big eaters, so a small bag of food can usually last a couple months. (Just remember to store the food in air tight containers so it doesn't go bad.) So really it doesn't cost a whole lot more, than a cheaper food. I can't really recommend a food from walmart, sorry! But that is what I do to keep my dog food costs down! |
Hello, I'm not familiar with the brands of dog food Walmart carries but maybe you can find a brand they carry on the list of foods below. This list is from the Dogfoodadvisor.com site. You may want to also want to check this list of foods out at your local pet store also because they could very well have a dog food within the same price range as Walmart. ;) Best Dog Foods |
I'm not from a small town but you can order dog food online and have it shipped to you! Chewy offers free shipping for orders over $49. |
Buying a high quality food will save you money in the long term because it will keep your yorky healthier. |
I like in small town also. The only place to get decent dog food here is from my groomers. I have travelled 45 minutes away to buy some puppy food when my groomers was on vacation. You could order online or just travel. Please remember there is no perfect food just what's right for your dog. I agree with our members buying the best food possible is better in the long run. Besides small dogs eat less per pound so its really economical to buy a good food. The better the food the smaller the poop. |
I also wanted to add please do not buy a Purina food because they are the owners of waggin train chicken jerky which is killing and making many dogs sick and they wont pull it. Please also remember to watch all treats and make sure your not buying any that are made in china. |
Recomendations So what all foods do you guys recommend? |

Almost everything in walmart is made in china. If worse came to worse I would buy online before going there |
Jada has allergies and the only two foods I have found she tolerates well is Natural Balance LID Sweet Potato and Venison and California Natural grain free Sweet Potato and Venison. I am in a rural area too and I have to order online. I have been getting mine from Dog and Cat Food, Treats, and Supplies | Free Shipping at Chewy.com . They have free shipping on orders over $49.00 and you can set up for auto shipments too. Their delivery is super fast. I usually get the biggest bag and store it in a vittles vault. The big bag will last my two about 6 months. It averages out to be a little over $2.00 a lb. |
My baby is 9 months old and the food issue has been stressful for me since I brought her home at 12 weeks. She wouldn't eat much at all, I had to make it a game to get her to eat. I finally tried Stella and Chewies, she has been on it for 4 weeks now and she loves it. When I am making her food she now barks and can hardly wait for me to put it in front of her. She eats it all in less than 5 minutes. She does poop less and her tummy used to make gurgle noises but not anymore. It is more expensive, about $1/day but so worth not having stressful meals. I do mix it with her other food and she eats both fine now so you might consider that to keep the costs down. You can always order it online. I agree with others in that feeding them better quality will help with health issues and thus be cheaper in the long run I certainly would give up some other luxury to ensure she could have this food. |

There are lots of good options and you can read a lot of food reviews/recommendations in the Health & Diet section too. |
My Zoey was murdered by Nestle Purina's Jerky treats. They will never get my business again because they refuse to take any responsibility. Mine are in FROMM's Chicken a la Veg and Honest Kitchen as a topper. They love the kibble plain too if I am too lazy to rehydrated the topper. Feed what works best for you and your dog. I have bought pet food online such as Mr. Chewy when it is less than if I bought it locally. |
I'm right there with you on the price thing, but you have to keep in mind a dog the size of a yorkie eats a tiny, tiny, amount of food. I can afford to feed Yumi and Yuri most anything because they eat so little, and it lasts so long. My sister feeds hers whatever she finds cheapest at whatever store she happens to be close to when she remembers she needs it, and they eat ALL the time. Her morkie is just slightly larger than Yumi and weighs nearly 3lbs more than her. She's just round. I think she eats more because she isn't getting what she needs from the food, and ends up with a whole bunch more calories than she needs. |
You definitely can’t go broke feeding your dog, you just have to be really careful these days with the quality of food you are feeding. Like hobbette said Yorkies are generally small so a 5 lb bag of good quality food will last you for some time... Also with the less expensive, less quality you will be buying more food since they wouldn't be getting the right nutrients- Most of those lower quality Walmart type foods have lots of fillers!! Just look around and see what you can afford, I agree with looking online at Mr Chewy's I have ordered from that website- Also Petco/ Petsmart have some decent quality food for not that bad price, and I think they have a special if you buy 3 bags you get a 4th free.. I think that is Petco that does that. For me my dog is 4.5-5 lbs and I buy him a 5lb food- he will generally take about 2-3 months to finish that bag. He eats 1/3-1/4 a cup a day. |
I am using Merrick dry kibble. I always had my puppy Khloe on puppy plate . I am switching my bichon back to Merrick. I had her on Innova but she is putting on too much weight. She was on Merick years ago before I changed her to Innova. I was thinking it was age but maybe it is the calorie content too. Some people don't like Innova because of the Procter and Gamble connection but Kirby loved it. Obviously she love it too much. Do you have a pet store or retailer that sells pet food in your town? Not grocery stores or department stores. If not check with some of the groomers. My groomer is only place in town that sells decent pet food. |
We feed Katie Scarlett Fromm. I have to drive 30 miles to a local pet store to get it, but it is well worth the extra effort. It is around $14 a bag but it takes KS at least a month to go through it, so that is not bad at all. I know you can order it online as well if that would be an option for you. Here is their website, but you can find retailers online as well. We rotate KS between their flavors. She wasn't too crazy about the 'Salmon Tunalini', but she loved the: Chicken A La Veg Duck and Sweet Potato Pork and Apple Fromm Family Foods Gourmet Dog & Cat Food, Naturally Holistic |
Once I realized that the higher quality food (ie expensive stuff) lasts longer because they don't need as much and they poop less, I decided I could definately afford it. Fortuantely my small town just got a Tractor Supply and they carry some good quality foods there (they carry some cheap stuff too but I just walk on by). I know how scatterbrained I can be so I need to be able to get food locally. OMGoodness....speaking of scatterbrained:rolleyes: I can't remember the name of the food I'm using. It's a good thing I know what the bag looks like. A five pound bag lasts Gabby about a month. Edited to add: I pour the food into container. That's why I don't have a bag to look at. LOL! |

When I got my fur-babies from the breeder, they were eating purina kibble and Little Ceasar wet. I switched mine to Wellness Small Breed puppy formula. The bites are the perfect size. I put the food down and they went straight to it. I tried to mix the Purina with the Wellness for a gradual transition, but they picked out the Wellness and left the rest. When it was time to graduate to adult food, they were not impressed with the Wellness Small Breed adult mix. They have been on Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier for the past 8 months and love it. They each about 1/4 cup of dry food each per day. Sometimes I put one or two table spoons of hot water on the kibble - they love that too. You can get a 10 pound bag of it from Amazon.com for about $45.00 (free shipping). I am fortunate to have access to several pet stores. A 12 pound bag of Wellness Small Breed is about $32.00 (free shipping). You may have to try several to find the one that is best for your pup, but once you do, there are several on-line places you will be able to purchase. Yorkies are famously stubborn, so you will end up buying the food that your dog will eat. |
You have gotten some great advice. It really isn't that expensive to feed a yorkie. We feed our cats and dogs premium foods and it doesn't cost that much monthly. Our cats go through a 15 lb bag of Blue Buffalo in a month, but when you calculate how much that it... it's around $1 a day to feed to very large cats. My dogs eat much less, so it's even less than that to feed one yorkie. So at fifty cents a day, you can't really go broke... Good luck finding a good food for Cocoa :) |
My grandbaby is 9 mos also and I started him on blue buffalo but he seems to eat better with wellness so i'm gonna stick with it! both are good you can get at petco or petsmart. Also they have websites where you can order food online if you cant find it locally. Mr.chewy.com seems okay.... good luck:) |
I agree...the highest quality you can afford with the least amount of undesirable ingredients. I have no idea what Wal-Mart sells, but if you need to buy from there, you might take a look for Iams Healthy Natural *green and beige bag) and/or Hi Tek Naturals. I know people who like both and I've read the ingredients on the Iams and it seems pretty clean...don't know about GMO aspect, of course, and it's not organic...but I've talked to people who had very healthy pets who were fed it. Online...? The sky's the limit, and some very good ones were already mentioned. Good luck! :D |
I always feed my yorkie with Royal Cainn!) Royal Cainn has food specially for Yorkie...which is nice :) |
I recommend Wellness small breed kibble. Sophie thrives on it and she seems to love it :) |
