is the kibbles too big? I am feeding my yorkshire TOTW salmon. is the kibbles too big for his size? everytime he bites into it, i hears "bone" like cracking sounds.. too hard? any long term issues i should take note of? should i change to those small bites kibbles? |
I feed smaller size kibble to Tibbe. Tibbe just won't eat really big kibble. With my Jilly who was only 3 lbs. and had a tiny muzzle, I couldn't always get the small bites size for her in the food she had to have and often had to stick her kibble in the blender for a couple seconds to knock a good deal of it down to size. |
thanks for sharing. the reason y i feed totw, which they do not have small size bites, because my westie has super sensitive stomach. he has really loose stools if fed on other brands and I have tried at least 8 brands! the westie can only be fed kibbles with proteins in the range of 20-28% and must be single food source. For eg. if it is a fish kibbles, it must be a single fish, eg salmon, not salmon with cod with blah blah blah.... and TOTW is the only one i came across now with low protein and single meat source brand. And i cant feed two different food to the 2 dogs as they will always "compare" and end up eating the other's food and defending their own. So i have to feed the same. lol. |
I cut each kibble in half with a knife and my baby seems to like it better. Kind of a pain, but no more than she eats it doesn't take long. |
My previous Yorkie just could not eat the big kibbles ( she was 3 lbs). The vet kept saying that she could eat them and she would when she was hungry, indicating she was just being picky. When she totally quit eating I discovered that her whole mouth was sore from trying to eat the big kibbles. |
You may want to try putting the kibbles in a bag and whacking them with a mallet to break them up smaller. Natural Balance also has single protein source foods, and the kibbles are flatter so they are not as hard for little mouths to chew. |
We fed TOTW pacific stream for over 2 years. The kibble is quite big around (like an M&M candy) but flat enough that they crack easily. Ziva likes to eat slowly and would crack each one of them- it was noisy! Abby swallows her food whole and managed to get them down- altho I did crack them with a kitchen meat tenderizer hammer at first. The probiotics and single protein are really helpful for some dogs diets. |
When I used to try to get Gracie to eat kibble I would cut them up with some old dog toe nail clippers. One by one. She still didn't like them.:( |
Eevee is 5 lbs and I recently switched her from TOTW salmon puppy (which does have small kibbles) to the adult kind of TOTW salmon, and she hasn't had any problem eating it. But my dad has a 6 lb Yorkie and he has to break up his kibble with a pill cutter so he can eat it. I guess it depends on how picky your dog is. |
As long as he's eating it fine, I wouldn't worry about it. My good friends Yorkies who are 4lbs and 6lbs eat Acana just fine (which is bigger than TOTW). |
Exactly how big is your yorkie? I would guess if it can and does eat it it's fine. Yumi started out on a very small puppyfood from the breeder, but she was stealing bites of Yuri's more normal sized pieces almost as soon as we got her (everything tastes better when it's Yuri's). |
my yorkie is 8 months old and only weighs at 1.8kg. so stuffing him with food now... he don seems to mind biting into the kibbles but am worry if it is too taxing for his gums or tooth. seems a few yorkie is doing well with big kibbles. |
