Need help on in-house pee training
 

My yorkie is 5 month old now. He knows to pee outside very well.
However, when he's at home, he cannot pee on pee pad very accurately.

Sometimes, he pee on the place only a few steps away from pee pad.

Can someone give me some advice on training?

Bumping this. I don't use pee pads but I am sure someone has some advice for you. Good luck! :)

Try putting the pee pad on a slightly larger square of something like linoleum or a rubber mat for easier clean up of misses.

He might be hitting the same spot over and over again because he is attracted to the scent. Clean up the flooring with an enzyme cleaner to remove the scent.

What kind of pads do you use and what kind of surface are they on? If you are using disposable pads on carpeting for instance, maybe he doesn't like the sound that the pad makes when he steps on it. If the pad is in a holder, that might be encouraging him to aim from afar. I have read instances here where dogs will pee on the side of the holder and think they have hit their mark.

Is there anything else around the pad that maybe makes him stop a few steps short?

Does he always do this or does it occur more frequently as the pad gets fuller? You may try switching the pad more often then.

I hope one of these suggestions help solve the problem.

Sometimes the pee pad may seem to confined or too small and the puppy doesn't want to feel that way. Kipper would begin to edge outwards when he had peed too many times on his or if it was too crowded with other things around it (we have his pee pads in our laundry/mud room). The worst time I had with him started when I put one of those liquid scent warmers in the outlet next to where he goes potty. He began trying to find somewhere else to go! I immediately removed the scent warmer and he returned to his reliable using of the potty pads.
Others have suggested using treats when the puppy uses the potty pad appropriately. I never tried that because Kipper has always been pretty good at going on them. I did stay with him when he was going potty and when he edged too close to the corner of the pad, I would nudge him back on. I am not sure if that helped him get the idea of the boundaries or not, though. I wish you success in training your puppy to use pee pads. I love them! I now use washable ones--I made my own and they are so nice to have. Kipper didn't even notice the difference, although I did leave a disposable one down along with the new one I had made.

The way I trained Tatiana was with large bath towels. I folded the towels in thirds and placed it in a large plastic tray. That way, when the urine soaked through, it didn't touch the floor. It was a potty tray. The tray size was approximately 20" x 30."

I placed the potty tray inside an exercise pen that's only big enough for the potty tray, and a small area where she can eat, and have her water (there's a small water dish).

About every couple of hours, I would put Tatiana into the exercise pen (and close the gate). I would say,"Go potty." I would wait about 5 minutes. If she needed to go, she would sniff around the potty tray, and go potty. She did NOT go potty in the smaller area because that's where she ate (I feed all her meals in her exercise pen by putting the food in the small area. Every time after she ate, she would go to the potty tray, and go potty. I think this reinforced in her to go potty in the potty tray inside the exercise pen). If Tatiana did not need to go, I would open the gate of the exercise pen, and she stepped out. Again, I put Tatiana in the exercise pen about every two hours for about 5 minutes with the command, "Go potty."

I did this drill every day for several weeks.

Now, she takes herself to the exercise pen, and goes potty. The exercise pen is kept open at all times. The only time I close it is when I feed her. She eats and potties herself, and then I open the gate. All this takes less than 10 minutes.

BTW, Tatiana's potty towels are laundered separately on laundry day.

Oh. Whenever Tatiana pottied when I put her inside the exercise pen, she got a lot of praise and petting when she stepped out. She loved that.

Even to this day, whenever I notice she goes and potties herself, she gets a lot of praise and petting.

I think this helps.

You may need some advice from a male yorkie owner. Is he lifting his leg yet? He may need more room. Many people like the fabric pads. They're washable and also a little bigger.

Be sure you use a good enzyme cleaner to clean the pad area to rid the space of any scent.

Keep at it. He'll get it. At least he's going in the right vicinity! Good luck.

Terry doent lift his leg while peeing. It's strange that he can poo on the pee pads but he just cannot pee on the pee pads.

My bedroom is carpet floor. So, I put a plastic mats (the one puts under computer chair) on top of carpet floor. And, I put 2 * 11'x15' size pee pads on the mats.

Note. Terry doesnt like to pee/poo whenever we are watching him :(
