Where do you keep your Yorkie when you are away from home? My little boy just turned 1 year old on Sunday. He's small - about 3 1/2 pounds. When I leave for work, I put him in a pen in the kitchen. It is a 6 panel pen, but I'm only using 4 panels to make it square, and so it fits. It is 30" wide. So, it is 2.5 feet square pen. I put a blanket in it, that he prefers to lay on, a dog bed, his food and water, and some toys. I go home at lunch time to let him outside, and he doesn't have accidents in the pen. But, he will pee or poop on my floors if he has to. I'm wondering what other people do with their Yorkies when they aren't at home to keep them happy and safe. Are they loose in the house? Are they loose in a room? Are they in a crate or pen? I'd love to get some type of gate to contain him in the kitchen, but the gate would need to be about 6 feet wide and easily movable. Any ideas? (My kitchen, living room, and dining room are all open to each other.) |
Peanut is in his crate in my closet with the closet door open. He loves it in his crate, he is safe and I don't have to worry. I saw a really cute gate at CVS, I bought it for my kitchen. It is black and has bone shaped cut outs... Not sure how long it is but it fits the opening of my kitchen. It is really easy to move around as well. |
Most of the time Lexie is with me everywhere I go, but when I leave her at home, she has the run of the house. Rarely has there been an accident. She just sleeps or watches TV. If she hasn't pooped yet, I keep her in a 30' X 60" pen with her crate & pee pad. That's where she sleeps at night, too. Works great. Depends on how reliable and active your dog is as to what he needs best. |
Depending on how long I will be gone and where I am going. If I am making a short trip locally I give Sophie Kate free roam of the house. Longer trips or further away she is crated. I should note Sophie Kate had to earn the free roam right, it was not given right away until I knew she was fully pad trained and would not cause problems (harassing the cat, chewing). |
two of mine have the kitchen and dining area to themselves...Miss Jersey whom I just brought home will be crated as I just found out she is a chewer...this is a new one for me as the other two didn't chew everything in sight. |
If I am gone just a few hours, Trinket stays in her x-pen with cartoons on. If going to be longer, in her crate which has a bedroom and a potty section. This is where she sleeps at night. |
Ours just run around the house and do whatever it is dogs do when the people are away. =] Nine times out of ten there is a little surprise waiting for us - on the potty pad - when we come home. :) |
Willow and Allie have full run of the house. I have potty pads out for them if needed. Luci is only 3 pounds and I put her in the playpen with bed, potty pad if needed. |
Mine just run the house. If they do what they do when I'm home....they pretty much just sleep. |
Riley has had full run of my place since he was about 8/9 months old... |
Morgan has a puppy playpen |
Kennel. |
Georgie has 2 options and it depends on how long we will be gone: Option #1 is for lengthy outings he goes to Grandmas:D Option #2 is when we are running errands and will be gone for a couple hours or less. He has the run of the house. My husband and I both agree we would love to see what he does when we go for Option #2 LOL. At grandma's he cuddles with them and sleeps most of the time. |
Tibbe just stays in the house like he does when I'm here. If I'm going to be gone over a day, he stays with my son. |
8 year old Gabby has the run of the house. She is well trained and rarely has accidents. 15 week old Harley is crated at night but when we leave the house, he is in the laundry room with a puppy pad, his bed and some toys. He has actually started using the puppy pad or at least getting close to it. Yay! . However, we are rarely away from home. I'm a home schooling mom and my husband does a lot of his work from home. And we take them with us whenever we can. |
Home alone I hate leaving Reuben, but when I do ,he has his pen in the kitchen and the passage way .I think he sleeps most of the time though. |
If I'm going to run a quick errand, I put Ernie in his crate but if I'm going to be gone for a few hours then he goes in his playpen with his brother Poochi in the kitchen. I used to leave him in the kitchen (using a table top as a gate) but then he started eating part of the wall but the playpen seems to be working out, even though it's 2 feet high Ernie is able to jump out it but hasn't been given enough opportunity to figure out how to consistently jump out of it but luckily you can buy a mesh roof for the playpen (keeping my fingers crossed this won't be necessary!!!) |
ZoE usually has the run of the house.... but I'm remodeling my kitchen & building a laundry room in the middle of the house, so I have stuff all over the place, (Kitchen cupboards & drawers emptied out & stuff stacked in the living room & all my china stacked in my living room, as I had to empty the china cabinet & buffet to move them, so my kitchen counters could come in through the front door...it's a mess...& I up to last week, I literally had everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink in my living room) so...I've been putting ZoE in my bedroom when I leave the house. I turn on the tv in there & make sure the blinds/drapes are open so she can see out, and I put her pee pad & food & water & toys in there as well. I think she's gotten used to it, because sometimes during the evening, she'll go missing & I go look for her.....there she is up on my bed, snuggled in the blankets snoozing away. |
Ahi pretty much goes everywhere with me. If I absolutely need to leave her home she has full run of the house with the t.v. on to keep her entertained. Although I believe she stays close to the door and windows to wait for us to come back. Usually someone is home with her otherwise. (Hubby or teenage son) |
We have gates and crates. If we are going to be gone a few hours they run loose. If we are going to be gone most of the day, Rubin is crated he is older and grumpy. Gracie has free run and pee pads Ginny Joy and Abba are gated in the office with pee pads. Longer than 6 hours we get one of the older grand children to Yorkie sit. Over night, we use an adult house, Yorkie sitter. |
We take Jaeger when we can, too. I'm a stay at home gal, so he's only gone when we run errands or some outings. He's crated in the front hallway with a water bottle and some chewies. He's 9 months but not 100% potty trained, and he's a bit spiteful yet-he's deliberately torn stuff up or peed on the bed because so and so didnt come into the house after I was dropped off, so the crate it is for right now. I've also been told that if firefighters find an animal during a search, they can take it outside, but they are NOT allowed to search for animals, and that scared animals usually hide during a fire and dont try to escape. Therefore, crating an animal allows it to be rescued in an emergency. |
my little one is still 5months, so i put him in his crate still usually, as i would say he is about 90% potty trained, but still has a accident once in a blue moon.I say ifyou have a puppy, crate him,but if he is an adult it is up to you |
When Copper was younger, we put him in his x-pen when we left. We still do that if we stay in my mom's vacation home or at my daughter's house. I make the pen as big as I can (8 sections) and Copper does fine with a potty pad, his bed and bowls and a couple of toys. At my house, my kitchen is next to my den, so I gate off that area. He does not have the run of the house, but the two rooms are plenty for him. jYou have to do whatever works for you. An x-pen is actually a great place with plenty of room for a yorkie in my opinion.:):) |
Jax has full run of house. |
My two have run of the house. Never bother anything. |
P-Nut just turned 1 and we leave him in a large pen when we go out. He’s perfectly happy in it and we don't use pee pads anymore. He's never had an accident. I'm waaay too nervous to let him roam freely yet. |
We never leave KS in the house alone for more than 3 hours. If it's longer, she goes to doggy daycare. We usually leave her for running short errands like to the grocery store, pharmacy, etc. When we leave, she has run of the house. Of course, we have dog proofed the house to the best of our knowledge. She is pee pad trained and so far has not had any accidents while we are gone. I leave the tv on for a bit of noise. Sometimes if it is a nice day, I'll raise the blind so she can get on her favorite window ledge to look outside if she wants. If it is nighttime, we shut all blinds and keep on several lamps. She hated being left alone at first, but now it has gotten to where I can be at the door, say the 'stay' command and she knows she has to stay. |
When I'm gone, Canyon and Brynley are gated off in my kitchen and dining area (tile floors) with their beds, food, water, toys and potty pads. |
My two usually run errands with us, but on the rare occasion that they don't... they have full run of the house. When we are gone for longer periods of time, I confine them to a bedroom with potty pads so they don't have the temptation of getting into things. Couver has been known to make a mess if we leave anything out, so I try to limit the amount of time that they are out without us home :) |
Harry has run of the house....but we still shut the bedroom doors upstairs :) We didn't let this happen 'til he was about a year old though....because we realised Mr. Houdini could escape from anything.....so it wasn't really worth 'enclosing' him! Scarey the first few times for us (a gradual process!).....nothing to do with pottying, just the worry of him chewing and getting into stuff he shouldn't....!:D Good luck!
