Can someone please help me out here I seem to have bad luck with finding a yorkie.. I went to view another puppy today. I fell completely in love with her, however something wasn't right. She is 18 weeks old, she has no hair on her tail, ears, or the bridge of her nose. Also the Skin on her legs are visible as the hair is very thing. Her back is full of hair. I also noticed severe dandruff. Does nyone know what this could be? He told me she is shedding her puppy coat, she has been bet checked etc as well. I want her and she is such a sweet girl, thanks everyone! |
what you're describing doesn't sound healthy to me. have you seen the vet's reports? neither of my yorkies lost their puppy coat this way either. it's not something that happens like that. |
That's not how a puppy coat is lost this pup sounds like she has a skin problem that could cost you a lot of money and maybe a life long problem. |
Yorkies do NOT shed. Their hair will grow out and has to be brushed and groomed. This could be bad diet,ringworm (highly contagious to humans),mange (some forms contagious to other animals). I am so sorry that you are having such a tuff time finding a baby. A healthy toy breed puppy is hard to find but worth the wait. There is a YTCA list here on the forum and that might be a good place to start looking for a good breeder that cares about what lines they produce and how healthy the babies are. Bringing home a puppy that has health issues that you may not of paid much for will only cost you a bunch in the first few weeks and month,nevermind the emotional stress. |

Your Vet Check Ask her if you can get your vet to check her out and make sure she isn't having an allergy problem. Fleas could also cause her to scratch her hair out. I wouldnt take her unless I could get her checked. Some things such as allergies and types of mange take forever to clear, if ever, and you spend a fortune on it. If she is legit, she won't mind. I know I would allow it if someone wanted to check one of my pups. If she has nothing to hide whe won't either. Since she is still pretty young it is possible that she has a thin coat and it hasnt come in all over yet. I had two that did have bald spots when they shed their puppy coat but they were much older than this dog. |
That sounds like a skin problem to me, my sister has a german shepherd who had a really bad skin problem and she was on steroids for life which did add up to a lot of money if you really want this yorkie i would be seriously be thinking about the financial cost of this yorkie before you make a decision :) |

If she was a "good" breeder the pup wouldn't be in that condition, it would have been to the vet with a real diagnosis. The only hair/fur my girl has ever lost has been when I brushed her. Not even her puppy coat "shed". It's not like it all falls out and then grows in new. It's a very gradual change, one day you look at your baby and realize she's not quite the same color as a few weeks ago. My girl even had "roots" on her head when she changed from a brunette to an old lady gray and finally to a golden blonde. (I think the gray was really the black making the new white/blond look grey) Never ever ever ever a bald spot. My neighbors dog had bald spots. He had some kind of allergies I think. I seem to remember them saying they were trying process of elimination with food. Don't know how that turned out but he looked like he was sick with some fur disease (but it wasn't a disease--just allergy) Sorry, keep looking for a good breeder and get a vet check etc. (or, rescue this poor pup, but know going in that it may cost you $$$$ and plan to stick it out no matter what it turns out to be) |
No that is not how a puppy coat sheds out. This puppy could have some sort of allergy problems, thyroid problems, walking dandruff which is actually a mite, or other parasites or as someone mentioned demodex. Something is very wrong. It doesn't sound like a good place to get a puppy. |
