Won't Eat Out Of Her Bowl Hi everyone - Mandie has this "fear" of sticking her head in her doggie bowl to eat her food. I have to pick some out of her bowl and lay it on the floor beside the bowl. I've never had a dog do this. I've had some get the food out of the bowl and take it somewhere else to eat it, but never this particular issue. I know this is an easy fix - just get her a shallow bowl/dish (right now, I've resorted to a saucer plate)... but I was curious if any of your yorkies have this issue? |
Tobie is the same way. He is only 5 months old but from the time he was13 weeks he was refusing to eat out of the dog bowls. I started using a small plate to feed him. He ate from that so I asked some friends if they knew where I could get some flat like dog bowls and a good friend suggested getting him some cat dishes that are flat like plates from Petsmart. They have these cute ones from Whisker City that are a pale blue with paws around the edge and spoiled in raised letters across the middle. This is my first experience with having a pup do this. My other stinkers don't care if it's a bowl or a plate just as long as it's food. |
Georgie does the same thing. At this point I take a paper towel and put his food on that and he eats fine. Our Boxer had no issues eating out of her bowl but Georgie is so different in many ways LOL |
Prissy will eat wet food from a bowl, but she has to have her dry food on a plate...She went through a stage when she had to have her wet food on a plate as well...The vet said she has me trained... |

Sophia is the same way.... she won't eat unless she is handfed now. I've created a monster, lol! But we're working on it.... |
Keno who is nearly 2 years old will only eat his kibble if I put it on a throw rug I keep in the kitchen. He has never eaten out of his bowl. When he is hungry he barks at me to go get food out of the bowl. He goes and sits and waits on the throw rug. Strange, never had a dog do this. But after the posts I guess this may be normal for Yorkies. |
Ziva (3 yrs) has always eaten off a flat dish. At first I used an oval side dish from a restaurant. Now I have a collection of corning ware"sidekicks" that I have picked up at yardsales. Abby eats from a little rice bowl my daughter bought in Japan. She doesn't have the "scared of putting her head in things syndrome" like Ziva! |

Actually I found Yorkie Talk when I did a google search while trying to find a homemade diet for Gracie to eat. She refused dog food from the start. I find it is quite a common problem with Yorkies. I did the hand feeding for quite a while but she was still not eating enough. I started finding recipes (here) to make home cooked meals. She would eat them when I first would cook for her but refused leftovers!!! I finally found she hated grain in her food. When I switched the grain to sweet potato she loved the food I made. I wanted her on a commercial diet though and after much trial and error I got her on a commercial grain free raw diet that she does beautifully on. I hope you are able to find a food she loves. Gracie eats off paper plates due to the raw diet. A flat dish will help but if your puppy does not like the food she is not going to eat well. Some say let the dog starve until they eat but I find a problem with that method. If the food is so repulsive to the dog that you have to starve it to get it to eat then perhaps there is a problem with the food??? Read up on dog food ingredients. Many of the larger commercial pet food companies are grain based foods. Dogs prefer meat so they put a lot of artificial flavorings and "meat by products" in the food as well as sweeteners to get the animal to eat it. Corn it's self is high in glucose and can help speed up tooth decay as well as lead to diabetes later in life. The whole pet food industry is quite complicated to figure out. It is self regulating, meaning it makes it's own rules about ingredients as well as labeling. You really need to take a close look at what you buy for your pet to eat as far as food and treats. Be careful with toys made in China as well. |
:D He he!! Harry will only eat his kibble out of a bowl, not a plate....and he will only eat his dinner off a plate, not a bowl..... He won't eat or drink anything from a bowl made of stainless steel - he thinks it's the enemy lurking in the bottom, waiting to get him.... :D Sally + Harry x |
Most of my yorkies don't like eating out of a bowl but some will. I keep a few bowls of dry kibble around but when I mix their kibble with canned food I feed that them them on a plate. I have one yorkie that liked to scrap the food off the plate with her paw and eat it off the floor. A few of mine will also grab a bit of food and carry it to the couch or bed to eat. |
Wow - I guess it is a normal characteristic for yorkies. That's very interesting. She likes her food (although she seems to like her big brother's food more - think it's an, "I want everything he has" thing lol). As soon as I put it on a flat surface, she eats up. :) Thanks for all the replies. I'm so glad I don't have to go put her food on a throw rug everytime. That's too cute!! |
Jaeger eats nearly anything, off anything-bowls, plates, the floor, etc etc. I hand feed him (he's not trained to ONLY eat from my hand) for training reasons. He's happier and better behaved when he is working. |
I would say 'Mommy/Daddy' managing is "normal" for a Yorkie. Mine change their eating habits to suit their mood. Sometimes Mia won't eat until after Brody is all done but she'll share a dish with the kitties. Neither will eat in the kitchen, where their food is, unless one of us is there with them. If we're there, they'll snack briefly so they can be ready to depart when we do. They have now refused to lap their coconut oil from a little bowl...it's out of the palm of Mommy's hand, or off her fingers, or a turned up nose. Their kibble is usually in a Corelle cereal/salad bowl or a very small 'puppy sized' ceramic, flat bottomed slant sided doggie bowl...other foods on a small plate, MY Correlle, of course...and they have no problem with that except as already noted. However, they prefer to eat from my hand...and MY FOOD at that...and drink from MY MUG...and Brody will sit there with a soup mug with slightly, spring water ice gently chilled, Gerber water in it for them...but he will simply "errrrr" and look back and forth between MY MUG and MY FACE to let me know that he wants a drink of MY, straight from the fridge through the door dispenser, well water! Am I wrapped? Uh...yeah...it seems so! :yelrotflm |
Lol Daisy does this too! A first she would take the food out of her bowl, put it on the floor, then eat it off the floor. She is getting better at eating out of her bowl now, but sometimes she still puts it on the floor. Sometimes I help her out and just dump the food out of her bowl onto the floor for her, lol... |
What a wonderful question. Bella also does not like eating from her bowl. If I remove the kibbles and place on the floor, she will then eat away. Lately I have noticed if there is only a bottom layer in her bowl she will then eat from it with no problem. I kind of wonder if it's the noise the kibbles make when her bowl is full that she doesn't like. |
