Nipping Hi guys well my 11 week old diva honey is now nipping she nips my neck and when she's costing on my Lap to sleep she nuzzled n nipped My thigh :( also she's digging in her cage on my rug on the sofa haha is tht all normal puppy behaviour and how do u stop the nips is this a sign she left mummy too soon? Puppies that leave home too soon have many ways of dealing with the frustration. Nipping and biting are a couple of ways they "play." Try to keep her calm as possible and don't let anyone play rough with her like playing tug or in any way getting her too excited. Try to give her a lot of exercise by walking, running, playing fetch. A bored dog tends to dig and become destructive. Terriers usually are high energy especially as puppies and their energy has to be directed in healthy ways. A tired puppy is a happy puppy and does not get in nearly as much trouble. |

Nip the Nip Sounds like your puppy just gets over excited. Puppies nip each other and play rough. Depending on his age and stage of development here are a few things that may help. 1. After You say a dramatic high pitched Oucheeeeeeeeeeeeeee ! Immediately put him on the floor or turn your back or walk away and ignore for about 5 seconds. He needs to learn 'Never put teeth on people, because they will stop playing. If love bites are not corrected it can lead to real bites that break skin. 2. If he nips while playing say 'Enough" and give him a toy instead of your hand and say 'Good TOY' when he bites the toy. Your cue word does not have to be Enough, You can use what ever feels right for you, like NO, or STOP IT. What ever cue word you use, say the same cue every time. Everyone in your family should use the same Cue words. (I do not like to say No Bite because, then you have to teach a new cue word for barking, rough play, fighting with other pets etc..) Enough is easy to use , and it always means Stop what you are doing right now ! Please do not play tug of war type of games with your puppy. This is too exciting for them, they get in that rip up the prey trance and you may get nipped. |
Ernie would nip a lot too when he was around that age, and each time he'd nip I'd make a yelp noise (just like a dog) and he'd stop right away. Got that advice from Victoria Stillwell when I'd watch "It's me or the dog" great show with great training tips!!! |
Very good advice so far. I just wanted to add congratulations and don't worry too much. Puppies grow out of that as long as you don't reinforce the behavior by sticking your finger in her mouth or playing tug of war, etc. Max (my Yorkie) always wanted to nip too and one YTer told me to startle him by making a hissing sound and abruptlly placing 2 fingers behind his ear. As odd as it sounds, I tried it and it worked. Just do what works for your girl and you can always teach her to fetch to wear her out. Good luck! |
