My Yorkie .Miss Abagail, is only 13 weeks old.She has had a time of it.She has been to the Vet every week I have had her.She has intestinal paresites and tape worms. She had bloody diareaha so house trainning has been difficult. She is better now.I considered buying stock in paper towels and cleaning chiminicals I bought so much of them LOL. I fastened her up in the bath room at night and always got up to a mess. I bought her a crate and put it beside my bed.(I put one of my old shoes in it because I had noticed she would lay down to nap during the day next to my feet or shoes. It has worked great.no more mess in the morning. A couple of times around 5am she whinned and I got her upand let her out. She went straight to her pad and relieved herself.I read the same thing you did about not being able to hold it long but she proved them wrong. She sleeps all night with her head on my shoe in her crate. The crate was well worth the money.Good luck Abagail's mom |

Sooo, the girls decided they like the name "Stella" (which is the name of the little chi we rescued, but whatever), coincidence? I think not! :p |
I realize you had her to the vet but unless they did a urinalysis there is no way they can tell you her bladder is OK. It is abnormal for a puppy to pee every 10 minutes. At night time there should be nothing around to make her nervous. You need a larger set up than a laundry basket. That is part of the reason you are having this issue as well as they fact that no puppy pees all night every 10 minutes unless there is a problem. Since you are up anyway at night you could take her out if you are planning on outside training. If you want to use pee pads you need to give her a separate place to pee. You might also add a commercial liquid house breaking aid to your pee pads. I know some say they already have them on it but truly some brands are better than others. At this point it can't hurt to try to attract her to the pee pads by a stronger scent. |

Just like with belly bands, the mere act of peeing/pooing is often enough to deter future accidents whenever the dog is wearing the belly band or panty. That's how I used it - she went in it twice, I changed it immediately and she never went in it again. Just like a belly band. I hope you don't think they are cruel too? |
She's doing good now, last night was night #2 of no accidents, she's nice and cozy. She uses her pup pads during the day and goes outside when offered. While I agree that the laundry basket setup is by far a non-permanent setup, it is working for right now. She's nice and cozy in her bed with her blanket. I'd like to at some point have her sleep on/in the bed with us, right now due to my 1 year old having health issues I don't have room for any sort of kennel in my room, when my little one moves into her room, then I'll be able to set something up like that. But right now, Stella has to be in something, I'm sure if she was loose on our bed she would have accidents. |

Sorry this is long. You have taken on a challenge at this time in your life. I hope you can work things out. There are wonderful xpens that would be a big help to you with the puppy and may actually help protect the pup at times and protect your floors at other times. Here are some examples: Amazon.com: dog exercise pen I don't believe in keeping a puppy/dog in them for long periods of time but when you cannot watch the puppy for a little while and at night they come in handy. My Gracie has slept with me since the first night but that is a whole different sort of training. People usually buy a small piece of linoleum to put under the x pens that do not have bottoms when you need to put it on carpeting. Best wishes on your new family member. She is very tiny and will need to be watched closely around small children. I know your older daughter has already been taught to be kind to animals but when a small dog gets excited and starts wiggling sometimes they accidentally fall and get hurt. Chi's are rugged as adults usually and can actually be kind of protective of the family if trained properly. They have a different sort of personality, much like a terrier, so reading up on training methods for a Chi might help. Glad to hear she is doing better. |

For me I am not a fan of belly bands or diapers. Belly bands didn’t work for us- Peanut would just pee (mark) in them and I felt it didn’t teach him anything. When we go places instead of putting that belly band on I watch him and make sure he doesn’t do anything naughty. I never tried diapers, but I feel it doesn’t teach the dog anything. They are just able to go pee whenever they feel like it. For a puppy I feel the owner should teach them the boundaries, you should start training them and teaching them where they can potty and where they can’t. Using diapers and belly bands is just masking the problems. |

this conversation is over. Do not write to me again |
I would just teach your dog housebreaking using the crate method for confinement when you can't observe her, a good regular schedule and leave off diapers or other human things animals don't need in order to develop good instincts and to learn. Dogs do sometimes soil their bed but over time learn not to do it if they lean this is their bed. They don't keep it up for very long. |
