It isn't mandatory at our Vet but they go over the importance and you have to sign something saying you would like to get it done or not. For me it's not even an option I get it done. I am glad you are too:) |

I gotta tell ya...I'm a bit shocked :eek:. I've never had a vet who didn't prefer bloodwork pre-surg. It's not *required* by all vets; but they'd almost always prefer you did it -- just as humans are required to get bloods pre-surg. It's about safety, health, and assessing anything that may indicate that surgery would not be safe at that time. The only exception I've seen to that is when/if your pet just had bloods within the past 2 weeks for something else -- and all looked great. In that case, I know my vet would prob say "well, just had bloods and they were perfect. If you're comfortable, we can use those; otherwise we can do a fresh draw". I would always always always get pre-surg bloods. Even when dogs appear totally healthy, the bloods can reveal reasons to postpone surgery. All surgeries are life-risking, even for the healthy -- so you want to give your girl the best you can give her. Aside from the bloodwork comment, do you feel comfortable w/ your vet, btw? |
RongWell, I have to say, I like my vet. She's new to the practice. I've always seen the original owner vet in the past 21 years. So I don't know why they gave me this new vet. My other baby sees the original vet that I've had. This new vet is very laid back to me, doesn't seem worried about anything. I'd rather be safe then sorry with my babies. I never thought to ask when my older baby was fixed if they ever did blood work. Hmm looks like I'll have to fin;d out. I do want blood work done for my little zooey. She's been through so much coming from a puppy mill. Were still dealing with her skin problem, its been months now. It has gotten better, but not completely healed yet. I'm kind of scared of blood work. Good to know, but yet scared of finding something devastatingly wrong will kill me! I'll call my vet on Monday and ask her again! |
I used to take my dogs to a low cost vet. I never really thought about it until I joined Yt. (Stupid huh?) So I went back to my old vet and they wont spay or neuter without blood work first. They charge quite a bit more but If I hadn't taken Oliver our Shih Tzu to my old vet I never would have known he had a problem with his liver count. He was retested and the results came back fine. They want to do one more retest before they neuter him. It just proves you get what you pay for. You can't cut corners when it comes to your pet's health and well being. |
That blood work is life saving. My vet requires it and its is in the break down of costs. Personaly I would be hesitant to use that vet. I'm really picky about vets now so just incisting on the bloodwork maybe sufficient. A few more things to consider many vets do spay neuter days mine does... I insisted my dog was the first obe on the table that morning going to the vets around 7 am I also left my girl there for recovery during the day but picked her up around 3 or 4. Many vets say they want to mobitor them overnight...then gee you find out np one is there at night or there are multiple dogs there.. I prefered to watch my dogs myself for on one attentiveness. You'll need clear instructions on the pain meds what to watch for and a kennel with sterile bedding ready a couple sterile changea too. I highly reccomend the kiss e cone from hotrodsmom. I dropped mine off at the vet with my girl and they had it on her there...they all really admired it too verses the conesthey have. |

I agree with the majority, I would never have an animal put under anesthesia without bloodwork first. The ONE time in my rescue group we had a very health seeming dog surrendered with a hematoma on her ear, the owner gave us bloodwork that was only 4 months old. We decided to save the funds and not redo bloodwork. That dog died 2 weeks later from renal failure. If new bloodwork had been done, extra measures could have been taken, and she probably would have survived and gone on to a forever home. I'll never make that mistake again! |
I agree, do the bloodwork!!! It's worth the extra expense IMHO. |
Final decision. Zooey is going to have blood work done before surgery! Spay, dental, and microchip. With her history, I'm not taking a chance. I just pray the don't find anything wrong with her blood results! Big day is Oct. 8 |
I'm glad you decided to get the bloodwork done. My vet requires bloodwork and I wouldn't ever consider putting either of mine under without having it done first. |
Blood Work Prior to Surgery Good that you decided to have the blood work done. If your vet doesn't seem interested in doing it I believe I would find another vet. Blood work prior to surgery is especially important for small pets. We people have blood work and pre-surgery screening done and if it's important for us, it is surely important for our little ones!
