my greasy guy 1 Attachment(s) Hi Yt'ers! i wanted to share my story about my Brew's greasy hair. He is 1 year 3 months and i have been giving him weekly baths. by the end of the week his hair would be noticibly greasy to the touch and to the eye. i was always extra careful to give lots of extra rinses for the shampoo and conditioner (and found the spray function on the kitchen tap a great helper) ANYWAY i was getting crazy bathing him every week and only looking great for about 5 of them. this time last week when i bathed him a skipped the conditioer completely - which i really didn't want to do because the shampoo alone gave his hair a almost waxy feel when wet in the sink that i didn't like. (similar to a soap residue from bar soap on the skin) WELL i'm now at 7 days and he is still looking great! i don't know if i can push it to two weeks, but it's leaps and bounds better then before. i thought i would put this out there for any other greasy guys out there, it may help. Brew has the silky-straight type hair. (attaching picture to show hair type) |

I have a greasy little guy too and not only that, it seems like his hair thinned out as well. I have had test done on him with nothing to indicate why he is greasy with thinning hair. The vet gave me a mediated shampoo specifically for oily skin and all that did was irritate his skin and make it red and inflamed looking. Went back to the vet and was given a mild shampoo for sensititve skin. Seems to be better results and not having to bath every other day but I am still puzzled as to why his hair thinned out. |

From what I read, it sounds like he "gets" greasy after a while, as opposed to "is" greasy after baths... ummm Apparently he's getting some good Nutrition or the opposite would be the case. Many with this or similar problems, use Dawn Dishwashing Soap as a preliminary wash. You also must consider that you are exacerbating the problem with the existing Shampoo not being thorough, or a Conditioner re-applying some (what they think are) necessary oils which are presumably washed away. |
Do you use any leave in conditioners (Or those sprays, like yorkie shine) for in between baths? Max will start looking greasy if he doesn't get conditioned daily. PLus it keeps his hair shiny and moisturized looking, and he always smells so good. Lol. Brew is adorable, and I love that tail of his. |
Abby looks so much like your pup, I am so sad she doesn't have her tail! We found that conditioner makes her hair greasy faster- I am looking for one that is light. Hand cream was another culprit- my daughter wasn't home for a week and she didn't get anywhere as greasy. |
thanks for the feedback every one! and to clarify - yes he looks awesome for the first 5 days or so and then his hair starts to grease out - (exactly like mine would if i left it for more then a day without a wash:rolleyes:) his kibbles are a rotation between: Fromm Duck & Sweet Potato and Acana Pacifica (chicken intolarance) funny the Dawn soap was mentioned. My groomer one time said in a pinch that it was way better then using a human grade shampoo on the pups. (conditioner was ok though). i do use a soothing doggy shampoo Essence i believe it was called (from pet smart) it was mostly in Itlaian for some reason. that bottle just finally empited on this last bath. i just picked up the papaya tropiclean so we'll see how this one treats us. all i know if i'm looking forward to no baths tonight!! :2party: |

i actually did buy a leave in - i thought it was sooo pretty - it has pearl extract in it, so it leaves a sparkly shimmer for a while. but it made the problem even worse!! thaaannnkfully it's beatiful for my pomeranians fur type! :thumbup: People tried to warn me that the pom would be so much to care for in her grooming. she is easy peasy compared to Brew! she doesn't tangle and dosen't get greasy at all. she stays soft for weeks. who knew!! anyway i'll attach the picture of that spray...just because google is awesome and it took two seconds to find. ;) |
