Ears not standing yet Harley will be 15 weeks old tomorrow. His ears are not standing up yet. I've read about tapping and trimming the hair. Should I tape them up and/or trim the hair? If so tell me exactly how to do it please. They do seem a little more up than when we first met him a couple of weeks ago, so maybe I just need to trim the hair, but I need that explained too because I want to make sure I'm doing it right. I don't want my baby to look silly.:rolleyes: |
There are some great videos on both on youtube. I use little trimmers and shaved the top third of Laddy's ears inside and out until his stood. Just be really careful around the edges that you don't snag the ear leather. |
I wouldn't worry about him looking 'silly'...it's temporary, and tape doesn't give an elegant look...lol I'd want to trim and tape so as not to harm his ears as my big concern...lol. As was suggested, there are lots of Yorkie websites and YouTube videos with instructions, and several different ways demonstrated. You definitely do not want to cut the ear leather or allow it to get folded under the tape. Here is one to get you started. Good luck! :D |

I'd want to remove the tape carefully, pulling the hair off the tape...not the other way round. But, with the ears trimmed, the hair should be minimized. I'd make sure not to catch the head hair in the tape, too. Here is a 'trimming' video. I actually use the clippers shown in this video...they are very nice for trimming ears. I have scissored the ear edges, but mostly I just...and this is hard to explain...visually...but mostly I just press the clipper into my finger just off the edge of the ear leather and with the blade parallel to the ear edge. It is impossible to cut the ear that way, and it doesn't hurt your finger either. I also use these trimmers to round/trim/touch up paws although I also scissor them, too. I have used it for sanitary trim/touch up as well. |
Last winter when I grew Ziva's hair out she actually couldn't keep her ears up- I had to trim quite a bit to get them to pop back up (she is 3 and has rather heavy ear hair, but has kept her ears up herself since she was 4 months) When she was a pup, I trimmed, massaged, and fed her yogurt and cottage cheese(for the calcium) just in case any of those things worked- seems like the trimming is most important! |
At what age are the ears supposed to stand? Jersey is 12 almost 13wks and my breeder told me she doesn't think her ears will stand. They have been trimmed and taped. I have two that ears have never gone up...really wanted Jersey's ears up.... |
Thanks for the help folks. I shaved the top and trimmed around and his ears already are looking a little more "up". Hopefully they'll come on up now. :) |

Floppy ears My Samson (Sammy) is 7 months old. His brother's ears are perfectly standing at attention. We sorta love his floppy look, but my groomer said if we don't trim his ears back the cartilage will break down. We are getting him groomed again this week, and if it is better for us to shave his ears so they will stand up, I will do it rather than to damage his cartilage. Anybody know more than me about this? Please share!! |
I would just have the groomer trim his hair down on his ears. You can also tape them up to help them stand. Good luck! |
