Male or Female? Hi everyone. So, I'm getting ready to pick out a puppy, but I was wondering: what sex is better? Are there any qualities that make one stand out over the other? Is marking their territory an issue with males? If I do get a male, will altering him make him gain weight? Thanks. |
I love having a male. He doesn't mark his spot or anything and he is almost a year old. I would love to have a little girl so that I could dress her in little bows and things like that but I'll just have to wait on her |

Hi, I'm very new here. I've been reading those threads for a long time but decided to join today because the search-engine is only for users.. so. I don't have a yorkie but have been dreaming of him(her?) for a long time. Anyway I have a question. I have male dogs home and we have been thinking of a girl, but.. how to handle "heat-seasons"? How often those little cuties have these? Twice a year or once? I have never had a female dog. I don't know nothing about them.. I need some enlightment. |

I have a male and he doesn't mark. He is very affectionate but also very independent. I have thought about having him altered but just haven't at this point. He is 4 years old. |
Hi there! I'm going to visit puppies on Saturday and I was wondering about the same thing of the males vs females. Those of you who have males did you have to train your dog not to mark or is it something that they didn't do because they were neutered? Leah |
I think you need to go check out the puppies and see who steals your heart. Watch out, there might be more than one! Both boys and girls are super sweet. If you don't have your heart set on one sex, I would take the one who takes your heart. It took me a very long time to find Princess. But when I did, I knew she was the one. It wasn't easy going to look, because they are all so darn cute. When Princess looked in my eyes, that was it, I knew just then we had to be together. Good Luck in your search! And please keep us posted. Welcome to YT Beyond! :yorkietal :yorkiesar |
An Alpha female will mark as much as a male...I would suggest that you go ahead and have any dogs you already have neutered and let their hormones get out of their system. Then, when you get a new puppy, either sex, have that one altered. That should help with the marking problems but it can still be really difficult to get all of them trained.. |
I personally prefer the personality of the males. I have found they seem to be more loyal and affectionate and less mischevious. Now I am only speaking of those I have and have produced. I do not have a marking problem (or should I say they don't..haha). I did have a female that was my marker so it's more in the personality not neccessarily the sex. My stud shares his home with 3 other males. they run free in my house. the girls do but only when they have their panties on :D It's all personal preference really. Good luck! |
I have a little boy and I love him to pieces!!! He is very sweet, affectionate and loves to give kisses. He is also more attached to me than he is to his daddy (I think the boys are always closer to their mommies). He is 7 months old, not neutered and starting to mark but we are still working on potty training so I hope to correct that behavior as well. I have never had a female so I can't speak for their qualities but if all boys are as sweet as my Nikko I would definitely say get a boy!! ;) (imo) |
I prefer females. I know that Chester had a long coat. Males still hike their leg up altered or not. Chester would still get urine on his coat. That's why I shaved him verses bathing him every 3-4 days. |
when i got rosie i wanted a female, she is the most loyal baby you can have she follows me everywhere and sits with me all the time giving kisses all the time. i also wanted a female because i dont like the humping male dogs do, though iv heard females can do it to, rosie never has but was fixed at 4 months when i get another one it will be female again |
i would rather have a female becouse you can put little bows in her hair and dresses and i agree with the male humping thing dont like that i have a female and she is great :) |
I personally think I would like a boy better :) Maybe because I usually play with male dogs.. for some reasons. I haven't met many female dogs.. Hmmm that is so strange if I think of it. |
