Good for you, the right one will choose you. Stick around and learn all you can, and there is alot...myself I learn something daily on this site. Like another poster had said, I knew nothing of AAI, HGE, Luxatiing Patela's, Liver Shunt and more that I can't remember the names of. It was through being on this site that I read and re-read and learned...boy did I learn and still learning today. The ladies and gents on here are some of the most caring and knowledgeable ppl i have come across in all my years on this planet (no i'm not an alien). Mandyangel, thank you for taking in that poor baby and finding its owners. I hope that if one of my two got loose that someone honest like you would find them :)

Also, I think it's great that you are taking your time to find the perfect dog. I would check out local shelters and rescues... I know there are a ton of yorkies near me and I'm in Washington. Where in WA are you located?

Mandyangel 09-05-2012 03:16 PM

I'm east of Vancouver, WA. Where in WA are you located> I wouldn't mind driving a small distance to pick up a doggie if it's the right one. I went to the shelter today, they have lots of lhaso apso's (sp), those are considerably larger than I want. Do you have the link to your local shelter I would be interested in seeing the yorkies/other breeds that are available.

BUT I also got some good/bad news.

The little doggie I rescued is apparently a frequent flyer to the humane society, they told me I should have kept the dog :(... They said if the dog comes in to the humane society one more time the dog will not be returned to the owner, I gave them my number and told them if that dog comes in again to please call me because our family would love that dog. I am not going to count on that doggie, we will continue looking for our own family dog. I wouldn't be able to live with myself keeping a dog that doesn't belong to me, but maybe if she gets caught again we will be first on the call list for her, poor little doggie.

I think it’s really irresponsible for the humane society to tell you that you should have kept the dog. They may have the legal right to take ownership of a dog, but a private citizen does not. People are going to read this reply and think its okay for them to just keep a dog, it is not okay. I think you were wise to give them your name and tell them that you’d like to adopt the dog though.

How big are the Lhaso Apso's? I've only seen small ones, but they are an adorable dog.

msyorktown 09-05-2012 03:52 PM

Lhasa Apso can be up to 20lbs...thats how big mine was..great dog wonderful with the kids..they were much smaller when i had mine..Lord how I miss Rankin...my very first dog, many many moons ago.

DBlain 09-05-2012 03:55 PM

most Lhaso Apso's remind me of large s**tzus, I would say at least 15 lbs and I have seen larger. If not well groomed they can look really bad, like dirty dust mops, but LOL that is only my opinion (I don't want Lahaso people yelling at me)

how do you spell s**tzu, the board thinks I am typing a bad word:D:D

DBlain 09-05-2012 03:58 PM

Jacqui, don't yell at me I am sure your's was impeccably groomed and you are right great with kids, that's why I suggested the OP go for something larger, not all yorkies will take to kids that are 1, 4, and 6 some of my past ones would nip and bite at kids

An "h" not a t. Shih Tzu. Lol, I thought Shih Tzu were bigger than Lhaso Apso's. I know so little about purebreds besides Yorkies. My son has two Shih Tzu, one is significantly bigger than the other, but both have the best personalities, and would be great with children.

Hi Donna...first its "Shih Tzu" pronounced shid zu... second I would never yell at you..lol! My kids were much younger when I had my Lhasa, I think my youngest was two, four, and 10. So I need a larger pup, as I said Rankin was wonderful with them...and you are right he was impeccably groomed, and he was professionaly trained..didn't have the inclination to do it myself, not with three little ones and being single AND working full time....training a dog was not in my vocabulary, sorry couldn't do it. You are absolulty right IMHO a larger dog is better with little ones. I always wanted a yorkie, but had to wait because of the kids. Now the KIDS are 21, 23, and 27. We now have not one but three yorkies...What can I say, I just love these little stinkers! :D

I have no idea what legal rights the HS has vs what a private dog owner has under such conditions, but I wonder about their right to NOT notify someone their dog is at the HS when CLEARLY the HS KNOWS WHOSE dog they have. I believe I'd be uncomfortable taking the dog unless I had the agreement of the original owner...not just the HS adoption papers.

I am reminded of the HS who found, scanned the microchip, and notified the original owner of a dog the AC took away as deceased after an attack, and the anxiety of receiving a call from the HS that a living 'deceased' dog was in their facility, and the family's elation when the dog turned out to really be their LIVE...not deceased...Yorkie baby! There is a thread about Armani on YT.

I would not want to be involved in that kind of situation...period...unless all parties sign over all rights.

That said, the HS has your contact info, maybe they also know what you're looking for...sort of, anyway...and who knows. Perhaps the original owner would welcome a chance to re-home their little runaway to a loving family, and if you find another small dog who also chooses you in the meantime, well, you'll just have two canine playmates, lap warmers, and snuggle buddies...like some of the rest of us...won't you? :D

Thank you for all the updates. Your baby (babies) is (are) waiting...:p

Taylor your post is not true at all, first off just because you spend $1,000 or more on a dog does not guarantee that you will get a healthy dog. Have you ever heard of lymphangiectasia, if not look it up. Well I bought a yorkie and paid over $1,000 from a well known yorkie show breeder, here is her web site About Us (although I don't think she is active now) My dog came from one of her dogs that came from Roberta Rotenbach, ever hear of her, if not goggle her name and you will see she is about the most respected yorkie breeder of all times. But my Duffy at 4years was diagnosed with this odd hard to control disease. Another dog I got from Karen wound up with an inoperable tumor on her spinal cord at around age 8, I don't blame Karen because serious medical issues crop up in expensive dogs as well. My next dog came from another show breeder and I paid out the wazzoo, and he had a sensitive stomach and pancreatis from early on and the most whacked out personality that made life with him extremely unpleasant. I think checking local shelters is a great idea, many people will tell you that their best dog ever was a pound puppy; can they come with health issues, sure, but from first hand experience I know they can come with expensive dogs from reputable breeders as well.

Just because someone does not want to spend or have the money for a $1,000.00 dog does not mean they will not spend money for vet treatment when necessary. I did not want to spend big bucks when I got Lola but most people would tell you it's not because I could not afford to it's because I choose not to. I would venture to say that most people that care about their pets find the money somehow to treat them regardless if they got them for free or spent $1,500.00 on them. I get the impression from your posts that you are not a rich person yet I know you have always managed to find the funds to take care of Callie, so why would the OP be any different than you.

It is very expensive to be a reputable breeder and they often do not make there money back therefore spending thousands upon thousands for genetic testing and everything else cost a lot of money and even $1,000 wouldn't not cover all the costs but that is normally a starting point for most reputable breeders. A person selling a dog for $500 more then likely has not done testing. In no way am I saying all expensive dogs are healthy but I am saying that reputable breeders will be over that amount and you are more likely to get a healthier dog from someone who knows the lines and does the testing when they cost a bit more. When a price is set that you don't want to go over most of the time people just don't have the money to go over that amount and that has been seen many times on this board.

I can't help but speak out on behalf of people that have adopted dogs from shelters that have lived long and healthy lives. And for the thousands of dogs waiting to get adopted. I am not even sure why the OP posted here, because she never said she found a Yorkie puppy or was looking for a purebred show looking yorkie, she is just looking for a puppy that will not cost an arm and a leg. Perhaps if it is so risky to adopt from a shelter then why should they even exist, perhaps all the dogs should be immediately put down because there is a risk they might have a health problem in the future.
After being on YT and reading the sick and injured section I sure read a lot about yorkies that cost a lot of money that wound up with things like CT, AAI, really bad knees and so forth. Yes if you can it's good to go with a breeder that health tests, but don't be fooled you can still wind up with problems. If one wants to be 100% sure they will have a dog with no health issues they should get a stuffed animal. For every expensive yorkie out there, there are probably 5 x's as many healthy pound puppies.

I am sorry but blanket statements like "if your wanting a healthy puppy that is not going to be sick its going to cost at least $1,000" just put me over the edge because I know this is not true.

I don't think I was clear in what I was saying I meant buying a puppy from a breeder I was not referring to rescues and shelter pups.

I think there was more to it than just "next time keep the dog" The dog is frequently seen roaming around the local dog park and other areas without supervision. The owner of the dog is supposedly very irresponsible with the dog. I had questioned some things when speaking to the owner of the dog, I had the dog for 4 WHOLE days, both the local vets AND humane society(s) had a description of the dog (one had a picture) We posted a flyer at the local dog park, posted an ad of our local CL, the humane society posted on CL, when I asked her what day she lost her dog, she said she wasn't sure, but she thought it was lost on Monday, I found the dog on Thursday. I would *KNOW* what day my dog went missing and as a responsible dog owner, would call the humane society, and local vets FIRST thing... They had not received a single call. I went back to the dog park several times asking people if they knew anyone missing a dog, that's how *I* found the owner, they did not find me. And the comment that was made to me on the phone was "I have another little dog that is missing her terribly" not "I've been worried sick about my dog"... Nonetheless, it's not my dog, it wouldn't be right to not make an effort to keep the dog, if I'm contacted by the humane society that she is available, I will by all means adopt the sweet baby...... I would guess that the HS is run by volunteers, some working more than others, so the lady I spoke with initially may not have recognized the dog or known much about her. Regardless I would try to find the owner.

BUT.....

We found a puppy this evening, it was a perfect opportunity, she's so sweet, not a yorkie, but super cute and a lovely new addition to our family! =)
