Question about Dew Claw Removal When the vet removes a dew claw are they just removing the "nail" part, or cutting the skin off close to the leg? Is there a lot of pain involved for the dog? A friend of mine is having her 5 yr old female's dew claws removed when she has her teeth cleaned because her other yorkie had his removed when he was a puppy and she thinks they should be removed. I don't think I would do this to a 5 yr old unless there was a problem with them. What do you think about removing dew claws from a 5 yr old? |
My 8 year old silky has his dew claws, and I would never consider removing them at any age unless is a problem with them, if not done when they are newborns and is no problems i would NOT give the dog that pain. just my humble opinion.. hugs, |
Most vets wouldn't remove dew claws for cosmetic purpose. Molly will be having hers done when she is spayed but that is because she has rear dew claws which are really large and have occasionally locked together "ouch!". But the front ones will be left alone as they don't cause her any problems. Personally I wouldn't have it done if it isn't nesscery as I believe it envoles the whole toe being removed. :animal36 |

When Mikki had her spay done we had her dew claws removed. My vet did recommend them. However, there was a concern with hers growing into the skin because of how they curled around. He also said that many dogs will get them hung on things and that can lead to problems too. I will be honest and tell you that I feel the dew claw removal concerned her more than the spay. She never bothered the incision from her spay but continually tried to lick at the dew claw area. Within 24 hours, she was pretty much back to normal. I am sure the vet will give your friends pup some pain meds if she has it done. I know many people don't get them removed. I decided to do it because of vet recommendation. I trust my vet so I decided to go ahead and do it. Is your friend doing this for comestic reasons or is the vet recommending the removal? I really do think she should discuss this with her vet. |
Uusually breeder have dew claws removed when tail is docked. before all the nerves grow. Simple then. Older maybe some pain |
I always have them removed as newborn when vet does the tails. It is less painful at that age and better to avoids any issues in the long run. We had a Chow years back that had to have them removed when he was about three. They were always getting caught on his chain. It was very painful for him and hard to see him in pain when it happened. The horrifying sound of him in pain was just too much. There was no other choice, it had to be done, no question. |
It sounds very painful to me. All of my other Yorkies had their dewclaws done, but Katie's front dew class were not removed. Her breeder does a lot with training and performance sports with her dogs, and I knew that she left them for a reason. I read something really interesting that you should show your friend. Pfeiffer's weren't removed as a pup bc Tammy had some concerns w/ her litter during those early days when you usually remove them. I have no prob w/ that :). Still, I asked our vet before her spay if we *should* take that opportunity to remove them - -and she said she wouldn't recommend it AT ALL. She said it's extremely painful, infection is dangerous, there can be ongoing problems after, and there are no issues w/ just keeping them anyway. We just trim her dews whenever we trim her other claws. Honestly, I'd prefer that breeders just leave them nowadays. It's easy to keep them trimmed, and personally I'd rather them not go thru it - just like I wouldn't declaw a kitty. I can't see a good reason, personally, that would drive me to have them removed...it's part of their little body. |
My friend asked me to come over and look at her girl's dew claws and give her my opinion after seeing them. They are on her back legs. I had just assumed they were on her front legs since I didn't even know they had dew claws on their back legs. Her pup wouldn't really let me get a good look because she was really skittish with me but the one I did feel felt really loose like it was hanging there by a small amount of skin. It didn't seem like much to take it off and it seemed to me that being on the back might even make it a little worse for getting caught on something. I told her that in her case I might go ahead and remove it but she should get her vet's opinion first. Hopefully it won't be too major and she will recover pretty quickly. I agree with what everyone said about the pain. I wouldn't want to put my baby through the pain but I hope it won't be too painful since it seems like a small snip would do it. |
Fwiw I don't know enough about Yorkie to know why they do it. But mine was done. I'm just curious to why even have the tail docked?? Whats the difference?? It's altered?? |
My concern is my little booger fights me when I go to trim his nails. His regular claws not so bad because they get worn down on our many walks, but not the dew claws. If the fighting continues I'll consider having them removed as I can't have them growing into his paws. Vet said leave it for now see how he does I may not need to remove them |
I am considering having Callie's removed whenever she gets her first dental and shes 5 but she has gotten hers snagged and ripped off once exposing the nerve and vein and had to go to the vet a be sedated to have it cut back. I think if its a very active yorkie who as had problems snagging before or almost then I would do it but if its a not so active yorkie that mostly is in side and has not had any issues with it then I would just leave them. |

I trim Brody's and Mia's dew claws when I trim their other nails...sometimes just the dew claws if they need it. I just feel the dew claw when I hold and pet them, and trim them before they get too long. |
