You can also train an alternate behavior, eg, staying out of the dining room, and he gets treated at the end of dinner. |
It's pretty natural for them to do this as in the wild or natural setting, they watch each other eat and most I know do some form of it. I usually just have always ignored it as dogs are so food driven but if it bothers you, send him to bed or have a demarcation line that he cannot cross and every time he does, get up and move him back until he stops. Eventually he will learn not to cross the line. He's not doing it to bother you - it is just his instincts of survival kicking in, thinking he must take every opportunity to avail himself of any likely food, no matter how well fed he is. |
Never give him food when you are eating and ignoring it is the best thing. My dad growls when his dogs do it and they stop. |
Harry doesn't actually do this - he tends to take himself off to bed when we're eating - poor, hard done by, little boy....;) :D However, we had a Hoover...I'm sorry, I meant a Labrador, called Rosie who was the world's worst...we actually put a piece of masking tape across the carpet and told her to 'Stay behind the Line'...!!!! Sit, and Stay! :) And she did!!!! A year or so later, that 'line' came up, but she would always stay behind that virtual line...worked a treat! :D Sally + Harry x |
