Is there anything to worry about? I found my cat and Charlie in the backyard toying with a dead rat this morning. They had his stomach ripped open and were just having fun with it. (sorry for the detail) I managed to get it away from them and get rid of it, (it was gross) but should I worry about diseases. I know it is normal and that's what they will do if they see a mouse or rodent. So sorry if I sound like a worry wart. Just wondering. |
The only thing I can think of the rat may have had rabies |
Do rats carry the hantavirus? |
I googled it..On the CDC's website it says the commom house mouse does not carry the hanta virus, but it also said that the virus cant be spread to dogs cats or farm animals. |
If the rat had recently consumed rat poison, it causes bleeding and your pups would need to be treated quickly. |
Well we don't have a huge rat problem so we don't have any poison out. I'm sure they're ok. The only thing I could think about was keeping them away in case it had a disease and trying to get a shovel and bag at the same time. And Charlie was running from me because he wanted to play with it and knew I didn't want him too. He finally let me get him and put him inside so I had time to get what I needed to clean it up. Why do they want to play with a dead rat! I know it's nature but YUCK!! |

It was a large mouse. To me it looked to big to say mouse but to small for a rat. Maybe a baby rat. |
Rats are known to carry and spread leptospirosis |
Yikes! Well, it's dead and as long as it's not a rat, sounds like ya'll people there are at least safe from anything bug-y like hanta!!! And since terriers are natural ratters, your guys are performing true to breed. Bet the dogs are proud! My Scotty once killed a house mouse "for" me - and brought it to me dead - and headless!!! I had just had surgery but almost climbed the bedroom curtains getting away! |

Rabies, lepto, lyme disease, toxins and various skin infections &I paracites. If you bag the mouse your vet can run a test on it to check before you worry about unnecessary treatments for your dog & cat. Here its like $15 |
