My yorkie is getting fat My 5 month yorkie , Nena, has gained 1lb in a month. I had changed her food to Royal Canine Yorkie puppy food. She loves it. I give her 2/3 cup a day. She is 4 lbs. is this normal to gain this much weight during her growing stages or is it the new puppy food? She was 3 lbs about 3 weeks ago. |
Yes, it is perfectly normal for puppies to have growth spurts. If you are feeding the suggested amount for her weight she is not fat. Puppies do not get fat unless they are caged all day and never get exercise. Many people who think they have purchased a tiny dog start thinking their puppy is fat when it gets past the size they expected it to be. Your puppy is still growing even though you would like it to stop. It is too young to stop growing so accept the fact that it is not going to be unusually small. It has nothing to do with being being fat it has to do with genes. Your dog will continue to grow until it's genes say stop and the food has nothing to do with it. |
I really don't want her to be too small. I will be very happy within the 5lb range. Nena get alot of exercise. She loves to run. I take her out to run every day for at least 20 minutes. I find if she doesn't get her run time she is so hyped in the evening. I give her Cheerios has a reward treat. I will b starting puppy classes and the trainer was surprised I gave her Cheerios. Thanks |
Your baby is only 5 months old. She still has some growing to go. She could still gain 2 to 3 or more pounds. Most dogs grow the most in the first 6 months and then their growth rate slows down a bit but they will continue to grow until they are a year or more old. They usually gain muscle and bone mass from 10 to 14 months old. |
A puppy can not be fat. It is normal for puppies to grow a lot that is just what they do and show they are healthy. Its when there not growing that there can be a real problems. |
