EBAY classified sells pets Please if you saw my post about facebook also listen up again about how ebay now has classified ads that allow people to sell pets. Please write to them and let them know this practice is promoting and helping puppy mills and backyard GREEDERS thrive. Tell them we want it to stop. Speak up and stand up for what is right...ETHICAL BREEDING!! |
Don't think its going to make them stop just like writing to craigslist wouldn't make them take the animal section down. We just need to educated people who want a puppy whats good and whats not. |
I advertise on my local ebay classifieds when I have a pet puppy to sell, I do screen the people very carefully, but remember we need to get the word out when we have a puppy to sell, not all breeders that advertise on the classifieds are bad. If we can't use the media to sell the puppies how would people know when we have a pup for sale? not everyone checks the AKC classifies, very few people do. We need to sell the puppies we have available and word of mouth works for me but even I sometimes need to advertise. hope you guys don't knock me over the head but advertising is a way to sell the good puppies too... hugs, |

How are we supposed to advertise when we have a litter??...I dont use the newspaper.... I also screen and pre approve my buyers...75-80% of my puppies are placed with people who have been referred to me by people that have already done business with me. I usually have to work off a waiting list, but there are times when I have babies I need to let people know are available....advertising does not make a breeder a "greeder" or a "BYB"..... |
I actually found my little one from Ebay for Pets Classified and she is an AKC registered puppy! I followed this breeder for a year before buying and I'm very pleased with my little girl! |
I should add that I do think we as owners should do our homework before buying! I didn't know much about Puppy Mills but was very hesitant to buy from just an ad in the paper. My breeder allowed me to visit the home and meet Hope's parents. There was no doubt in my mind that my breeder cared for the pups she had. |

I will never go to ebay again....I wrote to them, let me know what happens...:( |
I agree with Yorkiemom1 and Carmen in nj. I work with rescues, we advertise in local papers and on line, when they are ready for a forever home. If we don't have someone on our waiting list. We foster many dogs that would be put down because shelters do not have the money for extended care and/ or behavior modification foster homes. Dogs are placed AFTER they are fostered, healthy, spayed/ neutered and assessed to what kind of home is best for them. |

COLD, HARD TRUTH..."CULLING" THE LESS THAN DESIRABLE.....BREAKS MY HEART.......I was absolutely stunned and amazed, shock and awe, when I was told years ago, that, "For goodness sake, if you ever have a baby that has.... (a long list of things that are "a bad mark on a breeder") these are things you just keep your mouth shut about...you dont broadcast that because people will think you have poor quality dogs that throw (whatever it is you are hiding)....you just have to cull those pups, or you can pay a vet to put them down....". I was stunned and shocked into disbelief....and among the things "we cull", were any parti colored pups..... |
Ok let me take my foot out of my mouth and ask this question...when on ebay do you SELL them for a set price or do people bid on them? |

because with AKC even with a spay and neutered contract is WAYS of getting around it...$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ , I don't blame the AKC entirely, they are in Business and they want to make money too. it happen to a BIG name breeder in PA.. so, is up to ME to make sure my lines are protected and safe...and my less desireable puppies are placed in loving homes.. and I do have an OPEN DOOR policy for ALL my dogs.. you guys can hit me over the head and throw the kitchen sink at me now, I have said my peace in this matter.. hugs, |
We petitioned against this tears ago, on the end eBay said their policy allows for this and they suggest people evaluate the animal and person they are vuying from themselves. eBay however said they will NEVER allow animals to be listed as auction or buy it now items, pet or livestock sales are strictly only allowed on eBay classifieds. |

eBay classifieds are supposed to he a local medium for people to do face to face exchanges just like craigslist or your local news paper classified. The major problem we had with eBay classifieds was pup mills using it and meeting buyers in public places saying they feared robbery and thus no parents or home viewing... |
I found my Choppa there. It was my job to meet the breeder and make a decision. The babies are not on auction blocks and if something goes wrong you can report the seller. I do not breed but I can imagine the feeling of having an amazing puppy be looked over because the breeder felt they shouldn't list where their puppy could find a home. You search by city and state so you can easily find a puppy for sale near your home and have one less worry if it's a Cameroon scam. I even see shelters trying to find homes for rescued babies on ebay classifieds. Shelters put a lot into helping these babies, I would imagine that being able to show their little faces for free or a small fee is a huge burden lifted. I'm no expert but I have seen some terrible stuff go on on gorgeous, well put together websites so I think EBay CLASSIFIEDS isn't such a terrible Place to find a new baby. But that's just my opinion. |
this makes me feel a WHOLE lot better: Ebay's response: Hello Rachel, We understand your concerns around the re-homing of animals on eBay Classifieds and we respect opinions and feedback on the subject. The inherently local nature of eBay Classifieds, which fosters in-person meetings, offers a more responsible way of finding a new pet compared to purchasing pets from distant sellers online. People hoping to find a pet can meet directly with the current pet owner or breeder face-to-face. This personal interaction provides the opportunity for pet seekers to see where the pet comes from and gives shelters and pet sellers the chance to meet the prospective new owner and evaluate whether the new home and family will be a good fit for the animal. Because we recommend that buyer and seller meet face to face and see the animal’s parents, buyers can attempt to ensure that they are not purchasing a pet from a puppy mill or kitten mill and that sellers can ensure the pet is going to a good home. Unlike many other classifieds providers, eBay Classifieds offers consumers a range of educational materials including pet ownership guidelines that we developed with input from the Humane Society of the United States. To help new pet owners, each pet ad on eBay Classifieds includes a link to these "Responsible Pet Ownership & Adoption" guidelines. Additionally, through a partnership with Petfinder, nearly two-thirds of the pets listed on eBay Classifieds are from shelters. We do not condone the unethical treatment of animals, and we take measures to identify and block irresponsible breeders from our site. We listen closely to our community for reports of any unhealthy animals being sold by our users. A user who is found to have violated eBay Classifieds’ pet policies will face disciplinary action, including suspension or prohibition from the site. Although eBay Classifieds is not able to screen every ad that is posted, we do follow up on specific concerns. Buyers are urged to report any person suspected of violating the Animal Welfare Act, animal cruelty laws, or any other laws regulating the care and sale of pets to eBay Classifieds so the ad can be removed. It is important to eBay Classifieds and to the animal lovers that frequent our site that ethical and legal requirements covering the breeding and sale of pets are followed by our users. In accordance with many state laws, eBay Classifieds prohibits the sale of puppies or kittens under 8 weeks old. Any ad in the pet category that does not comply with applicable laws, including laws set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as well as the Animal Welfare Act will be removed immediately. eBay Classifieds will suspend any user who is found to have a history of non-compliant inspections with the USDA. We hope eBay Classifieds can be used to find forever homes for animals in all situations. Thanks, Kelly R. www.ebayclassifieds.com |
i do apologize to those i've offended. didn't realize it was a local listing only. and yes the fight is defin to educate the buyers on what to look for not just eliminate all forms of ways that BYB can advertise. |
I think it was good you posted. It was on your heart that something was wrong and you found that it actually can really help both human and animal. One less worry for you with all of the stuff going on in the Yorkie world. Plus, someone seeking a pup may have just found a new place to search. We have all learned from this post. |

i got cedric from ebay classifieds. there was no bidding, set price. his breeder is awesome and i have since referred a couple of people who have also gotten wonderful yorkies. i believe it is like anything else you need to do your research and be sure it is a reputable situation. i went to her house and also played with his parents. cedric is the best furr kid i have ever had and so far he has been healthy with no issues. |
This is one of those instances of throwing the baby out with the bath water places like ebayclassifieds did not offer pet advertisement. Our local shelter advertises on ebay classifieds to help find homes for those in the shelter. Shelters have limited resources and the more people they can reach the better. I am not saying that everyone that goes to the shelter to adopt a pet is screened in the manner a reputible breeder would do so but for those shelters having alternative resources makes a huge difference for those that are in a kill shelter. |
I found my Herschel on Craigslist last December. I got a little guy who had lost his owner to death. I did have to pay a rehoming fee. I am very happy with him and am lucky to have found him. There are honest and dishonest people on any and every thingh, not just pets. In my area, Palm Springs, most pet listings are for rescued and sheltered animals. |
I live in a region that is full of back yard breeders and some puppy mills. Our ebay classified ads are full of very sad looking poorly bred dogs. I'm sure it must vary according to where you live. It's nice to know that some good breeders use this resource to sell their pet puppies since people are always looking for a place to buy a good pet quality puppy. The problem is that the average buyer has no idea of how to find reputable breeder. |
My sweet Yorkie was found through e-bay pet classifieds. When looking for a puppy, not everyone knows where to look...even after searching the internet. The local pet stores sell sick puppies and I didnt know how to find a breeder, even after (as I stated above) I relentlessly searched the internet. And I'm not about to have a puppy "shipped" to me from who knows where, without meeting him/her first. Just because ones lists a pet for purchase through e-bay, what makes that any different from posting it through any other electronic outlet? |
