Cuterebra parasite=warning GROSS Hi all! We just had a disgusting evening, ended up removing a Cuterebra fly larvae from my yorkie's rump. She developed a small lump on her lower back a few days ago which started oozing and caused her to lick it a lot. I was keeping the area clean when today I noticed something moving in the now ulcer like sore - eww! I grasped the skin around the sore and out popped a maggot looking thing:eek: My skin is crawling just writing about it. Not knowing what had just transpired I immediately googled and found out what it was. Cuterebra Infestations in Dogs I wish I had known the warnings about what can happen if the larvae is left in the skin in any way, so I came here to see if others had experienced this. I only found two references to it, and both ended badly. I just want to alert others who cherish their pets of this apparently rare but possible situation. Take care :animal36 The worm in Xena was completely removed and is actually still alive in the baggie waiting to go to the vet for follow up. |
That happened to my Maddie once. It was on her back and oozing as you said. I took her to the vet and he pulled out a maggot. I nearly freaked out! They say it is more common in hot humid weather, so I suppose this would be a good year for them. Last summer my sister's dog had one. It seems to me someone else had one on here not too long ago. Maddie's bump healed up nicely once that ugly thing was removed! Good luck with your yorkie...I'm sure he/she will be fine! Now I've got to go search for the threads you found that ended badly. What happened to them? I will go have a look! |
Oh my that's terrible I would have been rushing her to the vet to make sure it was all out and she probably needs to be on antibiotics. |
Thank you for letting me know this happened to you and you had a positive outcome. I maybe should have searched longer, but the two threads I found, they said their dogs had passed and it scared me :( I feel itchy all over now after seeing this thing |
Wow and yuck!! I haven't heard of this! Good luck and hope there's not anymore! |
The vet never put my dog on antibiotics and the wound healed up within a few days! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ly-larvae.html |

Thank you all, especially Connie and kjc - I feel much better now, itchy, but better. I read your thread Connie and the story about the person getting one in her head, I am scarred for life! LOL I should have searched "maggot" - yuck! |
I take that back - I should NOT have searched maggot! OMG |
Yeah...I was so freaked out and itchy too. They say a person shouldn't walk bare footed outside as you could probably pick up one of those yucky things! Maybe it wouldn't hurt for you to dab a little hydrogen peroxide on the area! Hope you sleep well tonight and have only sweet dreams! |
oh i know how shocking that is. my 2 rabbits used to live outside in a large hutch. i was feeding them one day and noticed something strange on the little one. it was a hole on her back . i rushed her to the vet and gross it was a bot fly larvae. they had to anesthetize the the larvae and remove it and she was on antibiotics for a week. needless to say the rabbits lived inside from then on...:) |
I should not have read this thread...I think I need to go shower, again, to get the icky itchies off. |
It is gross but there isnt any way you could have forseen it or prevent it so dont feel bad |
Several years ago I took in a litter of kittens that had been born on our property. We had them in a box in a spare room. I noticed a small red area on one of the tiny white kittens. It got bigger over the next few days and developed a hole. I thought the area was draining. Like you, I noticed something strange looking inside the small hole. It was getting so big on this tiny kitten I made a vet appointment. The night before we went I gave a small squeeze to the wound and out came a huge worm like thing. It was hard to believe that something that size could come out of that little hole on that tiny kitten. The baby healed up right away after the thing was removed. So gross. I had never seen anything like it before or since. |
im glad ur little one is doing ok and you got that nasty thing out! ewww just yuck. |
