My first yorkie - Alfie Hi guys, new to the forum here. My fiancee and I took ownership of wee Alfie on Sunday. Having a fantastic time with him so far. http://i49.tinypic.com/1pxret.jpg He is due to get his first jab on Friday, so can't wait to finally take him out in a few weeks. We currently have him sleeping in a crate (which has his bed at the back and a pee pad at the front) while also having pee pads about the house. As he's only seven weeks, he's been pretty good about not going on his bed, but it's still a bit of a task to get him to go on a pad. If we catch him having an acident on the floor, we do try and lift him straight away and put him on a pad, but by that time the deed has been done! Does anyone have any advice as to how to tackle this? Also when is a good time to up how much food he gets? At the moment he gets a quarter of a tin a day (which is then divided up into four different meals) and he is currently scoffing it down. Reluctant to over feed him! Scott |
1 Attachment(s) pick didn't work earlier, here he is! |
congrats hes a lil beauty. because he is so young you might want to consider seperating his shots and do one at a time. some babies dont do well with getting all at once (when and if he is scheduled to do more than one vaccination at a time). i would check with your vet about the correct amount of food to feed just to be sure he is getting all the nutrients he needs. |
oh he is a tiny one so young..... He'll get it, just keep doing what you're doing. I use Nature's Miracle stain and odor remover for missed spots. |
I got Oliver at 11 weeks old, yes, week early, he just now got the all clear to be out and about with other dogs, he will be 6 months old on Monday. Check with your vet! |
Aw, he's adorable:love: If he seems to still be hungry, I don't think it would hurt to give him a tiny bit more. He's a growing boy and you know how they can eat:laugh: Welcome to YT:D!! |
Congratulations. Alfie is a very cute name. |
Hello and welcome.. |
He is still way too young to have any control over where he pees. It's going to be a while so be patient. He needs to have as much water and food as he can get right now. Don't try to ration it. He is still an infant puppy and you are going to have to treat him like that. You will have to have pee pads where ever he goes for now. When a puppy is 12 weeks old it starts to get the idea of where it should pee by your putting him in the right place but still has little control until it is about 16 weeks. Training a small breed dog can be trying and usually takes a little longer then a larger dog as they have smaller bladders. Right now he is pretty much a leaking faucet. |
Hi and welcome to YT. It seems like you are on the right track. Alfie is adorable. :) |
Hello and welcome to YT! Alfie is a sweetie! |

Welcome to YT your Alfie is adorable. We got Laddy at 9 weeks old and I found the only way to get him used to the pad was to soak a tiny spot of his pee up on the pad that way he had the smell there to go back to. Hope it works for you and good luck. |
Good afternoon Scott from a fellow UK-er! :) :wavey: I see little Alfie is already a Motherwell supporter?!!? Harry was nearly an Alfie - and would have been, if that was Mr. Rednapp's first name....;) :D He's absolutely gorgeous and I'm sure you'll have loads of fun....look forward to getting to know you! Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x |
When he pees on the floor take one of the wee pads and soak it up and then leave the pad there and he will probably go there the next time as he will small his pee. Work great for Dolly. Good luck. |
Yes, agree with the post about taking his pads and mopping a bit of pee up with it and he will smell it and head towards the pad. That's what we did with my Presley. It didn't taken him no time to learn. He still uses them for nighttime potty breaks or when it rains outside. He won't go out in the rain. He's adorable!! Have patience. He'll get the hang of it. |
:aimeeyork:congrats::welcome4::yorkiesar welcome and congrats on your new furball they will steal your heart |
Just keep training him and training him and training him, and he will be trained. then when he backtracks, just start over and do it again. Stick with it, and he will be trained. I hope you are one of the fortunate whose pup will catch on quickly! |

Hello and Welcome, Sott! Your baby is a beaut :). I appreciate all the afore mentioned advice. Wish I'd had such good, kindly advice when I first brought my Abi home. Don't be afraid to speak up with questions to your vet about spreading out the shots. And, potty training = patience, patience, and more patience :D |
Hello fellow scot. Can I just say Shame on you setting that little man up to fail ! MOTHERWELL supporter indeed:confused: Just keep doing what your doing he will get the message with the pads they are a clever bunch these yorkies. Can I suggest you change him to dry food though, wet is not ideal for yorkies as small breeds are more prone to dental problems. Does your vet have a nurse who deals with diet ? They can advise of this. It's easy to change, just choose a kibble, royal canin yorkshire terrier 29 or. Burns small bite are a couple of the ones I'v tried mix in a few bits with the food he has now and just increase the kibble and decrease the meat over a couple of weeks. And bingo . I give my girls some chicken or veg now with theirs just to keep them interested. Good luck and just be patient with little Alfie there is so much to enjoy with these dogs. |
He is very cute! Congrats on having a sweet new yorkie to love. |
Since Alfie is only 7 weeks old feeding wet food is fine. You can gradually change him over to dry food when he is older. He is really too young to change his food right now. There is nothing in dry food that helps to keep the teeth clean. Some of the dry foods actually contribute to tooth decay because of the glucose levels in them. The best thing to come out in the past few years are the enzymatic cleaners for pet's teeth. They even have chewy things with enzymes on them that will help get rid of the tarter that forms on the teeth. They have sprays and gels also that you can brush your dog's teeth with also. Since he is only 7 weeks old I wouldn't worry about it right now. He needs to just eat and grow. In time he will start being able to control his peeing and will get a new set of teeth. |
