Need puppy advice for my Morkie I have a 14 week old Morkie. Originally, I was pee pad training, then went to crate and outside training. I am going back to work in September and would prefer not to keep him in the crate all day while i am at work. He does great in the crate all night. Some accidents during the day still if I don't catch him quick enough. So, I was thinking of putting pee pads down in a gated area during the day while I am at work, but whenever I am home, I would take him outside. I have read on websites that this will confuse the puppy. Any advice or has anyone tried this? Thank you. |
im not sure how confused they are if it is part of their routine. cedric will do both and has since he was a baby...trained on pee pads but if we are outside he will go there if he needs to as well. and i would say for sure you dont want him to sleep in his crate and then spend the hours you are at work in there as well. i think if it is a consistent routine he will get it down.. |
Well, it can be confusing if you don't the dog out regularly. If a dog is very accustomed to using pee pads sometimes the owner may have to take the pee pads outside to get the dog to go potty. If your dog does understand that it is OK to pee outside you should not have trouble getting it to potty outside but you are going to have to take it out pretty regularly or it could have problems realizing just what it is supposed to do when you are home. |
My Brandi does both. She uses the potty pads and goes outside. I'm at work all day and she hated being crated. She would spend all day trying to get out. It took some time but she is now trained to use the potty pads. I love them because she can have the run of the house and I don't have to get up in the middle of the night to take her potty. She also goes outside. I walk her everyday after I get home from work (depending on the weather). If you do go with potty pads, get the washable ones. I save money and the environment by using the washable ones. Start now with training her because if you have the typical yorkie, it could take awhile. Good luck.. |
Thank you. I plan on not having the pee pad down whenever we are at home and will be taking him outside. I just don't want him to be confused and think he can pee in the house anytime. Hoping he realizes that when no one is home and the pee pad is down its ok, but when someone is home he knows to give a signal to go outside. |
