To Tape or Not To Tape? So my Dany's ears seem to have a mind of their own these days. When we got her at 8 weeks old (she's now 11 weeks old) her ears were up. Now, it changes day to day. Sometimes they are both up, sometimes one is floppy, and sometimes they are both floppy. I have been trimming her hairs around her ear to help, but it doesn't seem to matter. So now I'm thinking should I tape them? |
Yikes, I vote NO ! I did that with my first Yorkie and I ended up hurting my baby. Never did it again after that. Try shaving the hair front and back and than a few times a day massage them gently, nothing too harsh but enough to strengthen the veins. My girl Ruby who is 3, ears also have a mind of their own. When they start to droop that is when I know its time for a trim. The other 2 never had an issue, Brandi is a flop eared Yorkie every after all of the effort I put into trying to get them to stand up. |
Breeders have noted ears go up and down at this age. Shave them. |

I say, watch the videos, read the threads about it, then decide. I taped Ginny Joy's ears because one flopped. She has beautiful up right, prick ears today. |
how do you get them to stay still while you trim ears??? I still can't get my Emy to sit still hardly when I'm attempting to take a brush to her, no way could I get a clipper or scissor to her ear without her trying to grab or bite at them....she's so hyper right now....she's hard to handle sometimes, but I work everyday at brushing her....:( Her ears are floppy also. |
Tire her out. Mine get groomed after bed time, after a long day if double walks and a lil Dogswell brand Mello Mut chicken jerky. My daughter distracts our dogs witg treats while I use a peanut wahl trimmer. Maybe a trip to an experienced groomer is best for the first few times. |

It was tricky first few times but they get use to the grooming. I will take a shaver to his ears every 7-10 days. just the tips are down right now but they were up and down with teething, you'd think he was directing a jet in! |
I would give it a couple of weeks and see what happens. If they are up part of the time that means they are very capable of staying up on their own. Get someone to hold him in a towel and use a small trimmer to trim inside and out of the ear on the top third. Be real careful around the edges that you don't snag the ear leather in the teeth of the trimmer because even clippers can give a very nasty cut. |
Thank you everyone for the advice! I do think I will give it some time and continue to shave and trim the ears. I'll hold off on the taping for now :) |

Unless you are an expert groomer, dont go near the ears with sicssors...if that baby jumps or wiggles or moves, you are going to cut her ear!!!! |

Oh good point about the trimmer. Ears are so small they fit right in the clipper guards! Yeah I go up &the down the back of ears first and then "inside" on the front.. I have used scissors on Elvis ears but he turned into a bucking bronco once so fast abd spontaneously I just dont think scissors would be anything but haphazard with grooming my dogs. |

Most of Cozy's Pups have very erected big talking ears. Her ears only go to halfway up- The tips of her ears stay flipped down. I wish I had trained them when she was a puppy to go up. Her ears are actually smaller than her daughters ears. I taped and shaved Roxy, Zoey (RIP), and Lucy's ears til they were 6 months old and done without teething mostly. I would take the tape off for a few days and if they started to fall the tape would go back on. If the ears stayed up I would leave the tape off. |
I keep mine clipped. Never had a problem with them standing up. I have read on hear that when a puppy is teething their ears will go down. They say to shave the top 1/3 I shaved half of the ear...this worked for me |
Personally, I would keep my efforts limited to keeping the ears trimmed. Dinky's get very floppy as his hair grows. It is amazingly adorable. And I think the non floppy ears are adorable too. Just do what you want!! |
I can not remember where I found my ear taping procedure, but this is what I did. Take a paper bag ( the grocery store type) , trim it in to a triangle about the same size as the ear. One for each ear. Then use eyelash glue, and use little dots around the edge, and a dot or 2 in the middle. I actually put it on the back side of the ear..leave on 3-4 days, then remove. If the ears droop--repeat. I had perfect ears, and had no issues at all. As remember, it took 3 or 4 times, and then never had to do it again. |
