please help!!!!!!! Thank you for reading. I just got my first yorkie. She is already my baby. But sometimes she will be standing looking at me then she starts staring off like she is in a daze and her body will twitch. As soon as that happens she sets down and when her but hits the floor she i instantly back to normal as if nothing has happened. I do not know what it is and its happening a little more and more often. It never last longer then 3 seconds. Can smeone please help me!!! I am so worried and am not sure if its just something small dogs do. Or if there is an issue I should know about? All advice is appriciated. Thank you. |
I would talk to your vet about this. It could be seizures. |
You really really should have your baby seen by a vet. I know that hurts $$$ - especially since you just got her and may have already had a vet examination. However, what you're describing is not common yorkie behavior. It could be seizures or something else. A vet really needs to see her. Best wishes, Tracey |
Thank you both so very much. I was going to call the vet in the morning due to them being closed tonight and I knew if I posted on here you would help me quicker than waiting till morning. I do not want anything to happen to my baby and I have been worried sick all evening wondering what could be going on. Again thank you replying so quickly. Best wishes to you all |
I've never experienced this with any of mine... I agree your vet should see her! |
your pup is probably having seizures i have a chi that has had seizures as you describe. get her looked at. and if you have anyother dogs never leave her alone. most dogs do not like other dogs having seizures and will try to harm or kill them. get pup looked at for seizure disorder or very low blodd sugar too. take care |
Might be good to get it on video so you can show the vet exactly what she's doing. |
This is definitely not normal behavior & should be discussed with your vet , sooner rather then later. Also I want to mention that I went to your Album & noticed that you have a collar on her. Do you walk her with the collar ? it is best to walk her with a harness so as not to damage her trachea. Welcome to YT ! your baby is just precious.:) |
Has she had a vet check sense you got her? I think this really needs to be discussed with your vet and see what they think. |
I have had her to the vet for her second shots already. But I took her back today. They said that it is likely low blood sugar and I have been giving her karo syrup starting today. So far it seems to be working. When I notice her head starting to twitch I am on it. Yes I do have a very loose collar on her. It is there merely for her tag incase she gets out. I walk her with a harness. I have heard that where they are small never use a collar to walk them. I have always had large dogs (basset hounds). This Is my first yorkie and I am completely attached! She is my shadow. If they happen again I will try to tape it. That is a very good idea. I will also keep you posted on what goes on. Thank you all so much for caring about my baby. |
Welcome to YT! Sorry your baby has been scaring you, hopefully it's just hypoglycemia, easily treated. Please be sure to follow the Karo syrup up with some food, as the Karo alone will cause a spike in blood sugar followed by another crash. How old is your baby and how much does she weigh? If she's really tiny and not eating often enough that could be why this is happening. She needs several small meals a day, and definitely make sure she eats well before bedtime. If she continues to have the symptoms, I'd get her vet checked again. Don't forget to share pictures of your little one:D!!! |
Gracie is 3 1/2 months old. I have been feeding her 3 times a day. Buy sometimes she would eat one piece and run back to play. But I found out today just how important her eating had to be. All day I have been hand feeding (by doing her sit, down,up, training) she loves it!! Loves the treats she gets for doing her tricks. Which doing those I know for sure she eats till she is full. Plus I have been putting in some karo syrup. Things are getting better. Every now and then she will twitch. But not like it has been. If it continues or gets worse I am taking her back. I will do whatever I have to to save her life. I am hopefull this will help. But if not we will have a long road to go. But we will do it together. |

Good to hear that you took her to the vet, I pray all well with her..I admit mine has scared me a few times. I also have my vet on speed dial but learning to ask a few things here b/c so many here know more about yorkies than I do. |

I agree with Yorkiemom1. Hypoglycmeia is not corrected without intervention. Once the blood sugar is low it has to be brought up with nutrition. It's good that you are making sure she is eating. I would go easy on the treats and make sure she eats the amount of puppy food she should have for her age/size since this is what she gets her important nutrition from that helps form healthy bones and organs. Getting her accustomed to eating sweetened food could cause eating problems later. Only use Karo syrup in an emergency not as a regular thing. If you have any real hypoglycmeia Nutri-Cal is very convenient to have around. I hope your vet can make a correct diagnosis for you. |
Hello and Welcome to YT. I know where Jackson is, the Apple Festival place. You may need to make a trip to Columbus. I have a cousin that lives there and when her dog had a hard to diagnose problem she found a Vet in Columbus that knew exactly what was going on. I will see if I can find the link. vet.osu.edu/vmc |
Hello all. I am sorry it has seemed as if I have fallen off the face of the Earth. I have been really busy keeping up with this beautiful puppy that is growing so fast. Also I am still learning how to use this site, but I plan on becoming part of the family around here if you all will have me. I have learned so much while watching my little Gracie grow. I have to say I could not be happier. Even though she is my first Yorkie she will not be my last. I am hooked!! But I wanted to give you all an update on how she has has been. Like one of you suggested I took a video of the seizures and showed it to the vet. She wanted me to just watch her and try to give small amounts of the syrup. But I am glad to say that maybe 2 1/2 to 3 weeks later they just stopped. No one has a 100% explination. But I am just happy she is healthy and happy. Her ears now stand up and her hair is getting longer. I am still deciding if I want to let it grow out (not show length) or if I want to keep it the puppy cut... leaning to growing it. I also have learned and mastered bow making. So every day she has a new hair bow in her hair. She is so spoiled lol. I want to thank you all for taking your time to care about my baby and give helpful suggestions. Now I have a happy hyper normal yorkie who loves to tear pieces of paper in a million pieces if given the chance lol. |
